A new plant-derived antibacterial is an inhibitor of efflux pumps in Staphylococcus aureus
Winnie Ka Po Shiu,John P. Malkinson,M. Mukhlesur Rahman,M. Mukhlesur Rahman,Jonathan Curry,Paul Stapleton,Mekala Gunaratnam,Stephen Neidle,Shazad Mushtaq,Marina Warner,David M. Livermore,Dimitrios Evangelopoulos,Chandrakala Basavannacharya,Sanjib Bhakta,Bryan D. Schindler,Susan M. Seo,David L. Coleman,Glenn W. Kaatz,Glenn W. Kaatz,Simon Gibbons +19 more
TL;DR: Only moderate cytotoxicity was observed, with IC50 values of 12.5, 10.5 and 8.9 μM against human breast, lung and fibroblast cell lines, respectively, highlighting the potential value of this chemotype as a new antibacterial agent and efflux pump inhibitor.

Bead-based assays to simultaneously detect multiple human inherited blood disorders associated with malaria
Lynn Grignard,Catherine Mair,Jonathan Curry,Laleta Mahey,Guide J. H. Bastiaens,Alfred B. Tiono,Joseph Okebe,Sam A. Coulibaly,Bronner P. Gonçalves,Muna Affara,Alphonse Ouedraogo,Edith C. TL;DR: The bead based assay compares well to alternative measures of genotyping and phenotyping for G6PD and can be expanded to include other single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of interest.
Low and heterogeneous prevalence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in different settings in Ethiopia using phenotyping and genotyping approaches.

Tadesse,Fitsum G. Tadesse +20 more
TL;DR: A very low prevalence of G6PDd was detected in the present study populations, and the presence of the African variant (A−) was detected for the first time in the Ethiopian population, indicating that larger studies specifically designed to unravel the distribution of G 6PDd at small geographical scale may be needed to tailor malaria elimination efforts in Ethiopia to the local context.
G6PD Polymorphisms and Hemolysis After Antimalarial Treatment With Low Single-Dose Primaquine: A Pooled Analysis of Six African Clinical Trials.

TL;DR: In this paper, the association of 20 G6PD single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with hemolysis measured seven days after low single dose of PQ given at the dose of 0.1 mg/kg to 0.75 mg/ kg in 957 individuals from 6 previously published clinical trials investigating the safety and efficacy of this drug spanning five African countries.
Antibacterial Acylphloroglucinols from Hypericum olympicum
Winnie Ka Po Shiu,M. Mukhlesur Rahman,Jonathan Curry,Paul D. Stapleton,Mire Zloh,John P. Malkinson,Simon Gibbons +6 more
TL;DR: New antibacterial acylphloroglucinols (1-5) were isolated and characterized from the aerial parts of the plant Hypericum olympicum L. uniflorum and given the trivial names olympicins A-E ( 1-5).
