Human neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 require intact Fc effector functions for optimal therapeutic protection.
Emma S. Winkler,Pavlo Gilchuk,Jinsheng Yu,Adam L. Bailey,Rita E. Chen,Zhenlu Chong,Seth J. Zost,Hyesun Jang,Ying Huang,James D. Allen,James Brett Case,Rachel E. Sutton,Robert H. Carnahan,Tamarand L. Darling,Adrianus C. M. Boon,Matthias Mack,Richard D. Head,Ted M. Ross,James E. Crowe,Michael S. Diamond +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors defined correlates of protection of neutralizing human monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in SARS-CoV-2-infected animals.

Computationally Optimized Broadly Reactive Hemagglutinin Elicits Hemagglutination Inhibition Antibodies against a Panel of H3N2 Influenza Virus Cocirculating Variants.
Terianne M. Wong,James D. Allen,Anne-Gaelle Bebin-Blackwell,Donald M. Carter,Timothy Alefantis,Joshua M. DiNapoli,Harold Kleanthous,Ted M. Ross +7 more
TL;DR: This is the first report demonstrating broader breadth of vaccine-induced antibodies against cocirculating H3N2 strains compared to the wild-type HA antigens that were represented in commercial influenza vaccines.

Impact of age and pre-existing influenza immune responses in humans receiving split inactivated influenza vaccine on the induction of the breadth of antibodies to influenza A strains.
Ivette A. Nuñez,Michael A. Carlock,James D. Allen,Simon O. Owino,Krissy K. Moehling,Patricia Nowalk,Michael Susick,Kensington Diagle,Kristen D. Sweeney,Sophia Mundle,Thorsten U. Vogel,Simon Delagrave,Moti Ramgopal,Richard K. Zimmerman,Harry Kleanthous,Ted M. Ross +15 more
TL;DR: How imprinting exposure differs across age groups, influences antibody cross-reactivity to past hemagglutinin antigenic variants, and shapes immune responses elicited by current split inactivated influenza vaccines is described.
Elicitation of Protective Antibodies against a Broad Panel of H1N1 Viruses in Ferrets Preimmune to Historical H1N1 Influenza Viruses.
Donald M. Carter,Christopher A. Darby,Scott Johnson,Michael A. Carlock,Greg A. Kirchenbaum,James D. Allen,Thorsten U. Vogel,Simon Delagrave,Joshua M. DiNapoli,Harold Kleanthous,Ted M. Ross +10 more
TL;DR: This is the first report demonstrating the effectiveness of a broadly reactive or universal influenza vaccine in a preimmune ferret model and investigates how preexisting antibodies to historical influenza viruses influenced HAI-specific antibodies and protective efficacy using a broadly protective vaccine candidate.
61
Elicitation of Protective Antibodies against 20 Years of Future H3N2 Cocirculating Influenza Virus Variants in Ferrets Preimmune to Historical H3N2 Influenza Viruses.
TL;DR: This is the first study to show the effectiveness of H3N3 COBRA HA vaccines in a host with preexisting immunity to influenza, and it is shown that these vaccines were able to neutralize both historical H3 and contemporary, as well as future, H3n2 viruses with higher titers than vaccines with wild-type H3 HA antigens.
