Eight prion strains have PrP Sc molecules with different conformations
Jiri G. Safar,Holger Wille,Vincenza Itri,Darlene Groth,Hana Serban,Marilyn Torchia,Fred E. Cohen,Stanley B. Prusiner +7 more
TL;DR: It is indicated that each of the eight prion strains has a PrP sc molecule with a unique conformation and that the variation in incubation times is related to the relative protease sensitivity of PrPSc in each strain.

Subcellular colocalization of the cellular and scrapie prion proteins in caveolae-like membranous domains
Martin Vey,Susanne Pilkuhn,Holger Wille,R. Nixon,Stephen J. DeArmond,Eric J. Smart,Richard G.W. Anderson,Albert Taraboulos,Stanley B. Prusiner +8 more
TL;DR: It is reported herein that CLDs isolated from scrapie-infected neuroblastoma (ScN2a) cells contain PrPC and PrPSc, which support the hypothesis that the PrP Sc formation occurs within this subcellular compartment.

Alzheimer-like paired helical filaments and antiparallel dimers formed from microtubule-associated protein tau in vitro.
TL;DR: EM is used to study several constructs derived from human brain tau and expressed in Escherichia coli to study their self-assembly, finding that constructs corresponding roughly to the repeat region of tau can form synthetic paired helical filaments resembling those from Alzheimer brain tissue.

α-Synuclein strains target distinct brain regions and cell types
Angus Z. Lau,Raphaella W. L. So,Heather H. C. Lau,Jason C. Sang,Alejandro Ruiz-Riquelme,Alejandro Ruiz-Riquelme,Shelaine C. Fleck,Erica Stuart,Sindhu Menon,Naomi P. Visanji,Georg Meisl,Rania Faidi,Maria Marano,Cian Schmitt-Ulms,Zhilan Wang,Paul E. Fraser,Anurag Tandon,Bradley T. Hyman,Holger Wille,Martin Ingelsson,David Klenerman,Joel C. Watts +21 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that inoculation of transgenic mice with different strains of recombinant or brain-derived α-synuclein aggregates produces clinically and pathologically distinct diseases, which provides evidence that disease heterogeneity among the synucleinopathies is caused by distinct α- Synuclein strains.

Branched Polyamines Cure Prion-Infected Neuroblastoma Cells
Surachai Supattapone,Holger Wille,Lisa S. Uyechi,Jiri G. Safar,Patrick Tremblay,Francis C. Szoka,Frederick Cohen,Stanley B. Prusiner,Michael R. Scott +8 more
TL;DR: Branched polyamines are the first class of compounds shown to cure prion infection in living cells and may prove useful as therapeutic, disinfecting, and strain-typing reagents for prion diseases.
