Volatile compound secretion coincides with modifications of the olfactory organ in mantellid frogs
Christine Nowack,Pardha Saradhi Peram,S. Wenzel,Andolalao Rakotoarison,Frank Glaw,Dennis Poth,Stefan Schulz,Miguel Vences +7 more
TL;DR: Experimental evidence suggests that the pheromone of one mantelline, Mantidactylus betsileanus, distinctly stimulates sensory neurons in the MOO but not in the VNO, supporting an evolutionary connection of derived olfactory anatomy with chemical communication in these frogs.

New Anatomical Analyses Suggest a Pumping Mechanism for the Vomeronasal Organ in Anurans
TL;DR: Evidence suggesting the presence of a pumping mechanism associated with the function of the vomeronasal organ of the frog Phrynohyas resinifictrix is presented, and it is proposed that the fluid supply for the mechanism originates from gland secretions, which may also play a role in providing the vomersonal organ with chemical cues.

The nasolacrimal duct of anuran amphibians: suggestions on its functional role in vomeronasal perception.
TL;DR: It is suggested that the secretions of the Harderian gland are carried to the external naris by the nasolacrimal duct, where they bind chemical stimuli that are subsequently actively transported into the VNO.

Functional Anatomy of the Lateral Nasal Gland in Anuran Amphibians and Its Relation to the Vomeronasal Organ
TL;DR: The anatomical relationship between the anuran lateral nasal glands (LNG) and the VNOs of adult and developing animals is investigated for the first time and it seems very likely that the LNG is involved in the functioning of the vomeronasal system.

Ontogenetic Development of the Derived Olfactory System of the Mantellid Frog Mantidactylus betsileanus
Christine Nowack,Miguel Vences +1 more
TL;DR: The ontogenetic formation of this extraordinary anatomical state based on a histological study of a developmental series of M. betsileanus agrees with the phylogenetic hypothesis of the observed obstruction representing a derived state for these frogs.
