TL;DR: The pungency of Persicaria hydrop Piper (L.) Spach (formerly Polygonum hydropiper L., synonym water pepper) is produced by polygodial, a 1,4-dialdehyde derived from drimane terpenoids, which is identified as the active pungent compound in P. odorata (Lour.) Soják.
Abstract: Polygonum odoratum Lour. has been reclassified as Persicaria odorata (Lour.) Sojak [Wilson, K. L. Polygonum sensu lato (Polygonaceae) in Australia. Telopea 1988, 3, 177-182]; other synonyms currently used are Vietnamese mint or Vietnamese coriander and, in Malaysia, Daun Laksa or Laksa plant. The aerial parts of Laksa plant are highly aromatic, and they contain many organic compounds such as (Z)-3-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenol, decanal, undecanal, and dodecanal that are typical for green, citrus, orange peel, and coriander odors. In addition to these aldehydes, 3-sulfanyl-hexanal and 3-sulfanyl-hexan-1-ol were discovered for the first time in this herb. The fresh leaves are pungent when they are chewed, although the active compound has never been identified. The pungency of Persicaria hydropiper (L.) Spach (formerly Polygonum hydropiper L., synonym water pepper) is produced by polygodial, a 1,4-dialdehyde derived from drimane terpenoids. We also identified polygodial as the active pungent compound in P. odorata (Lour.) Sojak.

TL;DR: Results suggest that macrophytes specimens show specific associations with their consumers, i.e., the succession process of colonization becomes singular according to the phenolic characteristics of the plant.
Abstract: The invertebrate colonization was investigated during 56-day decomposition of two macrophytes species ( Eichhornia azurea and Polygonum ferrugineum ). The aim was to determine the role of macroinvertebrates in the process of leaf fragmentation. During material analysis, 2096 invertebrates were associated with E.azurea and 6154 were associated with P. ferrugineum , identified in 18 taxons, with predominance of Diptera larvae (Chironomidae family specially), followed by Oligochaeta species and microcrustaceans such as Cladocera and Copepoda. In both macrophytes the macroinvertebrates showed a significant increase of density through the process of decomposition, which is probably associated with the loss of phenolic compounds. Results suggest that macrophytes specimens show specific associations with their consumers, i.e., the succession process of colonization becomes singular according to the phenolic characteristics of the plant.
TL;DR: The phenylpropanoid glycosides, vanicoside A and B, isolated from rhizomes of giant knotweed showed beta-glucosidase inhibitory activity, with IC(50) values of 59.8 and 48.3 mug/ml, respectively, while p-coumaric acid and ferulic acid, corresponding to phenyl Propanoyl moieties ofVanicosides, exhibited very little inhibition.
TL;DR: Seed dormancy and survival are controlled by soil temperature fluctuations that differ with soil depth and seeds appear to have season-sensing and burial-depth detecting mechanisms based upon temperature fluctuations.
Abstract: To investigate patterns in seed germination and survival at three different soil depths over a long time span, seeds of Rumex obtusifolius, Polygonum longisetum and Oenothera biennis were examined as a function of season (spring, autumn) and soil depth (3, 10, 30 cm). Buried seeds were exhumed after 3 years and subjected to two different temperature treatments. These were gradually increasing and decreasing temperatures, starting at 5 and 35°C, respectively. Treatments commenced after a 5-day acclimation to the initial starting temperature with light. With increasing burial depth, diurnal temperature fluctuations decreased and seed survival increased. Seed dormancy patterns changed with season and burial depths for all the species. Polygonum seeds germinated between 15 and 35°C in spring, but not in autumn. Rumex seeds germinated between 15 and 25°C in both spring and autumn. The optimal germination temperature for Oenothera seeds differed between spring (>30°C) and autumn (ca 30°C). Seed dormancy and survival are controlled by soil temperature fluctuations that differ with soil depth and seeds appear to have season-sensing and burial-depth detecting mechanisms based upon temperature fluctuations.

TL;DR: A survey of nine plants growing on the soil polluted by manganese mine in Daxin County, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was carried out as discussed by the authors, which indicated that the exceptional high concentration of Mn was the most important limiting factor for plant growth among three metals(Mn,Zn and Ni).
Abstract: A survey of nine plants growing on the soil polluted by manganese mine in Daxin County, the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was carried out.The results indicated that the exceptional-high concentration of Mn was the most important limiting factor for plant growth among three metals(Mn,Zn and Ni).Pteris vittata, which roots showed good metal-enrichment of Mn and Ni,was turned out to have good tolerant ability of Mn,Zn and Ni according to the analysis in the paper.Miscanthus floridulus,Erigeron bonariensis,Polygonum lapathifolium and Erigeron canadensis were proved to have good Mn-tolerant ability.Microstegium gratum,Digitaria sanguinalis and Alocasia macrorrhiza were Zn-tolerant plants while Miscanthus floridulus and Erigeron canadensis were Ni-tolerant plants.Further researches which are of some significance to these plants will be still in process though hyperaccummulators of three heavy metals were not found in these plants.

Abstract: We examined nrDNA ITS sequences from 16 taxa of Polygonum sect. Persicaria(Polygonaceae) in Korea to infer relationships among the taxa within the section. A neighbor-joining tree obtained from the analysis of the ITS sequences suggest that the ITS region was useful inferring the phylogenetic relationships among the taxa. The neighbor-joining tree indicates that P.amphibium is clearly separated from the other Korean taxa. The tree aldo reveals the presence of five major groups in the Korean taxa of the section; 1) P. lapathifolium var. lapathifolium, 2) P. persicaria and P. viscoferum, 3) P. orientable and P. viscosum, 4) P. japonicum and 5) a group including the remaining taxa. these relationships depicted on the ITS tree are largely congruent with those inferred from morphological and anatomical characters.

Abstract: Results obtained in the experiment showed that pendimethalin had higher weed control efficiency than fluchloralin, however, pendimethalin became phytotoxic to mustard and non-selective in action at all the doses. Among the herbicides fluchloralin 1.25 kg a.i. ha-1 registered highest seed yield of mustard (10.39 q. ha-1) as it controlled the weeds like Polygonum percsicaria, Polygonum pensylvanicum, Polygonum orientale and Stellaria midia effectively. However, black necrotic symptom at the base of the plant was observed during siliqua development stage, which disappeared at later part of crop growth. Weeds removed huge amount of plant nutrients from soil to the tune of 165.13 kg N, 22.54 kg P and 158.84 kg K ha-1. Fluchloralin at 1.00 kg a.i. ha-1 was effective as preemergence herbicide in mustard to control weeds and to conserve the plant nutrients in soil on account of 118.08 kg N, 15.56 kg P and 104.58 kg K ha-1.
