Differentiable Monte Carlo ray tracing through edge sampling
TL;DR: This work introduces a general-purpose differentiable ray tracer, which is the first comprehensive solution that is able to compute derivatives of scalar functions over a rendered image with respect to arbitrary scene parameters such as camera pose, scene geometry, materials, and lighting parameters.

Micro-Rendering for Scalable, Parallel Final Gathering
Tobias Ritschel,Thomas Engelhardt,Thorsten Grosch,Hans-Peter Seidel,Jan Kautz,Carsten Dachsbacher +5 more
- 01 Jan 2009
TL;DR: This work presents an efficient and scalable method to compute global illumination solutions at interactive rates for complex and dynamic scenes, based on parallel final gathering running entirely on the GPU and demonstrates the applicability of the method to interactive global illumination, the simulation of multiple indirect bounces, and to final gathering from photon maps.

Differentiable Visual Computing.
TL;DR: This dissertation introduces three tools for addressing the challenges that arise when obtaining and applying the derivatives for complex graphics algorithms, and introduces the first general-purpose differentiable ray tracer that solves the full rendering equation, while correctly taking the geometric discontinuities into account.

Numerical Simulations and Empirical Data for the Evaluation of Daylight Factors in Existing Buildings in Sweden
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a comprehensive methodology for the evaluation of daylight levels in existing buildings, which comprises sample buildings of various use and their digital replicas in 3D, detailed numerical simulations and correlations of diverse point daylight factor metrics, a field investigation on residents' satisfaction with available daylight level in their homes, and a comparison between the numerical and experimental data.

Cramming More Components Onto Integrated Circuits
Gordon E. Moore
- 01 Jan 1998
TL;DR: Integrated circuits will lead to such wonders as home computers or at least terminals connected to a central computer, automatic controls for automobiles, and personal portable communications equipment as mentioned in this paper. But the biggest potential lies in the production of large systems.

Validity of the single processor approach to achieving large scale computing capabilities
Gene Myron Amdahl
- 18 Apr 1967
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that the organization of a single computer has reached its limits and that truly significant advances can be made only by interconnection of a multiplicity of computers in such a manner as to permit cooperative solution.
