Abstract: In this paper, we present uplink interference alignment (IA) schemes for two-cell multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) channels. Assuming that each cell has $K$ interfering users, we propose an IA scheme for the full interference channel (FIC) and derive the achievable degrees of freedom (DOFs). The proposed scheme is extended to a two-cell Z-interference channel (ZIC), where only one of the two cells is subject to interference. The achievable DOF for the two-cell ZIC channel is also derived, and it is compared with that of the FIC with the IA and that of the conventional orthogonal scheme based on numerical results.

- 07 Jul 2013
TL;DR: It is shown that the optimal DoF is a piecewise linear function, with either M or N being the bottleneck, and that not all proper systems are feasible and that the only set of feasible proper systems that lie on the proper-improper boundary are those with γ ϵ {1/4, 2/3, 3/2}.

TL;DR: In this paper, an interference alignment (IA) technique for a downlink cellular system is proposed, which requires feedback only within a cell, which can provide substantial gain especially when interference from a dominant interferer is significantly stronger than the remaining interference.
