The Quench Action
TL;DR: The Quench Action as discussed by the authors is an effective representation for the calculation of time-dependent expectation values of physical operators following a generic out-of-equilibrium state preparation protocol (for example, a quantum quench).

Abstract: We give a pedagogical introduction to the methodology of the Quench Action, which is an effective representation for the calculation of time-dependent expectation values of physical operators following a generic out-of-equilibrium state preparation protocol (for example a quantum quench). The representation, originally introduced in [Caux and Essler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 257203 (2013)], is founded on a mixture of exact data for overlaps together with variational reasonings. It is argued to be quite generally valid and thermodynamically exact for arbitrary times after the quench (from short times all the way up to the steady state), and applicable to a wide class of physically relevant observables. Here, we introduce the method and its language, give an overview of some recent results, suggest a roadmap and offer some perspectives on possible future research directions.

Generalized Gibbs ensemble in integrable lattice models
Lev Vidmar,Marcos Rigol +1 more
TL;DR: The generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) was introduced ten years ago to describe observables in isolated integrable quantum systems after equilibration as mentioned in this paper, and it has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool to predict the outcome of the relaxation dynamics of few-body observables.

Quench dynamics and relaxation in isolated integrable quantum spin chains
TL;DR: In this article, the dynamics after quantum quenches in integrable quantum spin chains are reviewed, and a pedagogical introduction to relaxation in isolated quantum systems is given, and the description of the steady state by Gibbs ensembles is discussed.

Entanglement and thermodynamics after a quantum quench in integrable systems
Vincenzo Alba,Pasquale Calabrese +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the standard quasiparticle picture of the entanglement evolution, complemented with integrability-based knowledge of the steady state and its excitations, leads to a complete understanding of theEntanglement dynamics in the space–time scaling limit.

Quantum phase transitions
TL;DR: The universe itself is thought to have passed through several phase transitions as the high-temperature plasma formed by the big bang cooled to form the world as we know it today as mentioned in this paper.

Chaos and quantum thermalization
TL;DR: It is shown that a bounded, isolated quantum system of many particles in a specific initial state will approach thermal equilibrium if the energy eigenfunctions which are superposed to form that state obey Berry's conjecture, and argued that these results constitute a sound foundation for quantum statistical mechanics.

Thermalization and its mechanism for generic isolated quantum systems
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a generic isolated quantum many-body system does relax to a state well described by the standard statistical-mechanical prescription, and it is shown that time evolution itself plays a merely auxiliary role in relaxation, and that thermalization instead happens at the level of individual eigenstates, as first proposed by Deutsch and Srednicki.

Entanglement in quantum critical phenomena.
TL;DR: The results establish a precise connection between concepts of quantum information, condensed matter physics, and quantum field theory, by showing that the behavior of critical entanglement in spin systems is analogous to that of entropy in conformal field theories.
Colloquium: Nonequilibrium dynamics of closed interacting quantum systems
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors give an overview of recent theoretical and experimental progress in the area of nonequilibrium dynamics of isolated quantum systems, particularly focusing on quantum quenches: the temporal evolution following a sudden or slow change of the coupling constants of the system Hamiltonian.
