Abstract: Vegetation surrounding pecan (Carya illinoinensis Wangenh. C. Koch) trees in a 4.3 × 6 m area was either controlled with a nonresidual herbicide for the entire growing season, not controlled, or controlled at certain times during the growing season. After three growing seasons, trunk diameters were suppressed 54% when vegetation was not controlled, 47% when not controlled until 1 Aug., and 37% if not controlled after 1 June compared to entire growing season vegetation control. Trunk diameters were not signifi - cantly different from entire season vegetation control when vegetation was controlled from 1 June through fall frost or vegetation controlled from April until 1 Aug. Vegetation in the plots was typically dominated by cool season herbaceous dicots in May and June, and warm-season grasses during August and September.

Long-term Effects of Four Groundcover Management Systems in an Apple Orchard
TL;DR: Long-term responses of trees to groundcover vegetation indicated that apple trees respond adaptively to compensate for weed and grass compensation in established orchards.
Interference of weeds on seedlings of four neotropical tree species
TL;DR: Significant decreases in the percentage of macro and micronutrients in the leaves were observed, especially at eight weeds/pot, which could warrant experimental practices in chemical control in conjunction with alternative methods to control of these two weeds in restored areas.
Phenological responses of juvenile pecan and white oak on an upland site
TL;DR: Pecan and white oak produce multiple products and wildlife values, but their phenological responses to N fertilization have not been well characterized, and growth responses to supplemental fertilization on an upland site near Booneville, Arkansas are compared.

Response of Young Pecan Trees to Trunk and Foliar Applications of Glyphosate
TL;DR: Results indicate that limited contact of glyphosate with the lowest 5 to 8 cm of the trunk of the young pecan tree, which usually occurs during conventional orchard weed management, is unlikely to result in adverse effects onYoung pecan trees.

Orchard Groundcover Management Impacts on Apple Tree Growth and Yield, and Nutrient Availability and Uptake
Ian A. Merwin,Warren C. Stiles +1 more
TL;DR: Multiple regression analysis indicated that leaf N and B and soil organic matter in 1990, and mean soil water content during the unusually dry Summer 1988, were the best predictors of fruit yield in 1990.
Orchard Groundcover Management Impacts on Soil Physical Properties
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared various orchard groundcover management systems (GMSs), including a crownvetch "living mulch" (CNVCH), close-mowed (MWSOD) and chemically growth-regulated (GRSOD) sodgrasses, during the first 6 years in a newly established apple ( Malus domestica Borkh.) planting, and found that long-term soil fertility and orchard productivity may be diminished under pre-emergence herbicides and mechanical cultivation in comparison with certain other GMSs.

Allelopathy of Bermudagrass, Tall Fescue, Redroot Pigweed, and Cutleaf Evening Primrose on Pecan
TL;DR: Two studies were conducted to determine if selected grass and dicot species had an allelopathic interaction with pecan, and trees were 10% shorter than the control when irrigated with bermudagrass or pigweed leachate.
Allelopathic effects of Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) and other plant residues in soil.
TL;DR: The effects of soil-incorporated Palmer amaranth residues on the growth of subsequent plantings in a spring-fall planting sequence in 1980 to 83 were studied in this article.

Mulch Improves Pecan Tree Growth during Orchard Establishment
TL;DR: Tree height, trunk diameter and leaf P and K concentration during 2 years and leaf N during 1 year of the study were positively related to mulch width, and trees receiving the higher N rate were taller during 2 of 3 years, but leaf N concentration was not affected by N rate.
