Abstract: Component-based software systems consist of various components, such as third-party components and in-house built components. Component changes frequently occur in software maintenance, which refers to regression testing. When changes made to a component, the component could be affected, moreover, the changes could bring impacts on the entire system. Related existing research did not address the issue of systematic regression testing of component-based software, especially at system level. This paper proposes a systematic regression testing method from components to system, including analysis of change, impact and test suite refreshment. The paper also reports a case study based on a realistic component-based software system using a state-based testing practice, which shows that the approach is feasible and effective.

A Systematic State-Based Approach to Regression Testing of Component Software
Chuanqi Tao,Bixin Li,Jerry Gao +2 more
TL;DR: This work identifies diverse changes made to components and system based on models, then performs change impact analysis, and refresh regression test suite using a state-based testing practice, which shows that the approach is feasible and effective.

An approach of security testing for third-party component based on state mutation
TL;DR: To effectively trigger implicit vulnerabilities of third- party components, an approach of security testing for third-party component is proposed based on state mutation, and the experimental results show that the proposed approach can effectively detect security exceptions of second-party components.

Efficient regression test selection and recommendation approach for component based software
Janhavi,Ashima Singh +1 more
- 01 Dec 2014
TL;DR: The paper proposes an approach `Regression Test Selection and Recommendation' which uses UML state chart diagrams and sequence diagrams to identify the changes which are further used for classification of initial test suite, selection and recommendation of test cases and development of a regression test suite.

Security Testing Model of Third-Party Component Based on Formal Monad and Its Application
Jin-Fu CHEN,Xiao-Lei ZHAO,Yi-Song LIU,Ru-Bing HUANG,Sai-Hua CAI,Yu-Chi GUO +5 more
TL;DR: This paper proposes a security testing model for third-party components using formal monads and data mining, addressing the challenge of testing third-party components' security due to unavailability of development documents and source code.

Insights into regression testing (software testing)
H.K.N. Leung,L. White +1 more
- 16 Oct 1989
TL;DR: The author's retest strategy consists of two major phases (the test classification phase and test plan update phase), which involves the use of the test plan in a way that will reduce the amount of testing required.

TL;DR: Two new metacontent based techniques are presented that address the problem of regression test selection for component based applications: a code based approach and a specification based approach.
UML-Based Integration Testing for Component-Based Software

- 11 Jun 2001
TL;DR: A test model is presented that depicts a generic infrastructure of component-based systems and suggests key test elements and a family of test adequacy criteria which allow optimization of the balancing among budget, schedule, and quality requirements typically necessary in software development.
