Abstract: This paper proposes a composite reflectarray system for realizing a reflector antenna for radio astronomy applications. The system is equipped with a tunable reflectarray rim that enables nulls to be formed within the field of view and reduce the impact of interferers on the observations. Full-wave simulation results of a physical reflectarray system are presented to validate the concept.

Design of Rim-Located Reconfigurable Reflectarrays for Interference Mitigation in Reflector Antennas
Jordan Budhu,Sean V. Hum,Steven W. Ellingson,R. Michael Buehrer +3 more
TL;DR: Design of a reconfigurable reflectarray for interference mitigation in reflector antennas. The reflectarray occupies a portion of the rim of the reflector and lays conformal to the paraboloid within this region. It is found that the dielectric and switch losses introduced by the reflectarray do not significantly affect the radio telescopes efficiency.

Loading Rims of Radio Telescopes with Reconfigurable Reflectarrays for Adaptive Null-Steering
Jordan Budhu,Sean V. Hum,S. Ellingson,R. M. Buehrer,Edward S. Rogers +4 more

TL;DR: The design of a reconfigurable reflectarray for adaptive null-steering in radio telescopes is presented. The reflectarray occupies a portion of the original reflector surface and is modeled using reflection coefficients. The reflection coefficients are obtained from simulations and used to drive a null in a particular direction.
Design of Reconfigurable Rim Scattering Reflectarrays for Null Steering in Reflector Antennas
TL;DR: In this article , a reconfigurable rim scattering reflectarray which can be retrofitted to existing high gain reflector antennas giving the reflector adaptive null steering capabilities is presented thereby giving reflector interference mitigation capabilities.

Pattern Control for Reflector Antennas Using Electronically-Reconfigurable Rim Scattering
10 Jul 2022
TL;DR: In this paper , simulated annealing was used to place sidelobes simultaneously with enforcement of a gain constraint, and the authors showed that deep nulling is possible even when element control is limited to discrete binary phase-only control.
