Abstract: Compositions, apparatus incorporating a composition, and methods of use are described, one composition embodiment consisting essentially of one or more reactive metals in major proportion, and one or more alloying elements in minor proportion, with the provisos that the composition is high-strength, controllably reactive, and degradable under defined conditions. Compositions of the invention may exist in a variety of morphologies, including a reactive metal or degradable alloy processed into an alloy of crystalline, amorphous or mixed structure that may constitute the matrix of other composition, for instance a composite. Methods of using apparatus comprising a composition, particularly in oilfield operations are also described (e.g. flow and displacement control, sensors, actuators). This abstract allows a searcher or other reader to quickly ascertain the subject matter of the disclosure. It will not be used to interpret or limit the scope or meaning of the claims. 37 CFR 1.72(b).

Oilfield elements having controlled solubility and methods of use
Nitin Y. Vaidya,Rashmi B. Bhavsar,Manuel Marya +2 more
- 06 Sep 2006
TL;DR: In this article, oilfield elements are described, one embodiment comprising a combination of a normally insoluble metal with an element selected from a second metal, a semi-metallic material, and nonmetallic materials; and one or more solubility-modified high strength and/or high-toughness polymeric materials selected from polyamides, polyethers, and liquid crystal polymers.

Dissolvable tool and method
Gaurav Agrawal,Zhiyue Xu +1 more
- 07 Dec 2010
TL;DR: In this article, a method of dissolving a tool includes, positioning the tool within an environment reactive with at least a portion of the tool, introducing the environment below a surface of the tools through at least one perforation formed therein, reacting at least an exposed portion of a tool exposed to the environment through the perforations, weakening the tool to mechanical stress, and fracturing the tool.

Expandable and degradable downhole hydraulic regulating assembly
Manuel Marya,Nitin Y. Vaidya +1 more
- 07 Oct 2010
TL;DR: In this paper, a degradable metal based element and a swellable component are used for hydraulic regulation in a downhole well, which can effectively regulate high pressure applications downhole and yet, as a practical matter, be removed via a displacement or drill out that may take less than 15 to 30 minutes.

Well operating elements comprising a soluble component and methods of use
Gary L. Rytlewski,Ashish Sharma +1 more
- 31 Aug 2005
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe well operating elements, one embodiment comprising a first component that is substantially non-dissolvable when exposed to a selected wellbore environment and a second component that are soluble in the selected well-bore environments and whose rate and/or location of dissolution is at least partially controlled by structure of the first component.

Metallic implant which is degradable in vivo
Bernd Heublein,Gerd Hausdorf +1 more
- 17 Jul 1998
TL;DR: In this paper, a medical implant made of a metallic material is degraded by corrosion at a predetermined rate, and negative long-term effects are thus avoided. But this is not the case for all medical implant types.

Encapsulated chemicals for use in controlled time release applications and methods
Baireddy R. Reddy,Ronald J. Crook,Dennis W. Gray,Russell M. Fitzgerald,Bradley L. Todd,Steven B. Laramay +5 more
- 04 May 2001
TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a method of using a first coating of a dry hydrophobic film forming material or a sparingly soluble material which provides a dry shield on the chemical and then forming a second coating of porous cross-linked hydrophilic polymer on the first coating which prevents the substantial dissolution of the resulting encapsulated chemical for a selected period of time.

Controlling the release of chemical additives in well treating fluids
Baireddy R. Reddy,Ronald J. Crook,Jiten Chatterji,Bobby J. King,Dennis W. Gray,Russell M. Fitzgerald,Ronald J. Powell,Bradley L. Todd +7 more
- 21 Apr 1999
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present methods of controlling the rates of release of chemical additives into treating fluids are provided by the present invention, which are basically comprised of causing a chemical additive in liquid form to be absorbed into a porous solid material whereby the chemical additive is encapsulated thereby and when the resulting encapsulated chemical additive was combined with the treating fluid, the chemical agent was slowly released into the treating liquid.
