Abstract: The complexity of modern software systems raises the general issue of performance improvement by intelligent strategies, reducing the administration overhead. Such approaches are important e.g. for systems to store and retrieve data as well as for complex runtime environments. Correspondingly, such different application areas are addressed by the three papers of this session. Thereby as the basic approach, always some kind of innovative formal data modelling at different system levels is carried out. These opportunities in the modelling and design of complex data structures provide some quite interesting advance in this field of software engineering.

A Philosophical Approach to the Concept of Data Model: Is a Data Model, in Fact, a Model?
E. Marcos,Alfredo Marcos +1 more
TL;DR: The present paper discusses the meaning of “model” in the area of Software Engineering from a philosophical point of view and suggests that the need for a philosophical discussion on the concept of data model is a further argument in favour of institutionalizing a new area of knowledge, which could be called: “Philosophy of Engineering”.
