Abstract: Continuous improvement has been analysed in the literature from two different perspectives: as a set of practices and processes and as a set of competitive abilities. What is however still lacking is an overall perspective that integrates both practices and abilities and at the same time enables assessing their mutual relations as well as their impact on performance. Based on a comprehensive literature review, this study proposes such an integrated model, whose hypotheses are then tested via structural equation modelling on an international dataset from 452 manufacturing firms. The results of the structural model test support the proposed hypotheses. The implications of the findings for researchers and practitioners are discussed and indications for further research are provided.

From Continuous Improvement to Continuous Innovation: A (retro)(per)spective
Harry Boer,Frank Gertsen +1 more
- 01 Jan 2000
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors define continuous innovation as the ability to combine operational effectiveness and strategic flexibility - exploitation and exploration - capabilities that have traditionally been regarded as antithetical and conclude that it is difficult, perhaps even impossible, to achieve continuous innovation.

Structural equation modeling in practice: a review and recommended two-step approach
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide guidance for substantive researchers on the use of structural equation modeling in practice for theory testing and development, and present a comprehensive, two-step modeling approach that employs a series of nested models and sequential chi-square difference tests.

Power analysis and determination of sample size for covariance structure modeling.
TL;DR: In this article, a framework for hypothesis testing and power analysis in the assessment of fit of covariance structure models is presented, where the value of confidence intervals for fit indices is emphasized.
Structural equation modeling and regression: guidelines for research practice
TL;DR: The article presents a running example which analyzes the same dataset via three very different statistical techniques and compares two classes of SEM: covariance-based SEM and partial-least-squaresbased SEM, and discusses linear regression models and guidelines as to when SEM techniques and when regression techniques should be used.
