Abstract: We present a design for an olfactometer, suitable for fMRI experiments, that can be constructed at extremely low cost. The olfactometer presents odors directly to the nose via a nasal cannula at unobtrusively low flow velocities, with no large assemblies required on or near the subject’s face. The olfactometer can be controlled manually, or by computer via a serial interface. A validation study verified that the olfactometer reliably presents odors to test subjects. Errors and response latency times decreased with increased flow rate in an orderly manner, as expected.

Methods for building an inexpensive computer-controlled olfactometer for temporally-precise experiments
TL;DR: The construction of an olfactometer is detailed that is constructed almost exclusively with "off-the-shelf" parts, requires little technical knowledge to build, has relatively low price tags, and is controlled by E-Prime, a turnkey-ready and easily-programmable software commonly used in psychological experiments.

TL;DR: Given the critical role of dopaminergic signal in gating information in DLPFC, the increased functional connectivity within mesocortical networks in open people may explain why these individuals display a wide "mental permeability" to salient stimuli and an increased absorption in sensory experience.

Extended-release naltrexone (XR-NTX) attenuates brain responses to alcohol cues in alcohol-dependent volunteers: A bold FMRI study

TL;DR: Brain activation was significantly altered and alcohol-related visual and olfactory cues elicited significant increases in orbital and cingulate gyri, inferior frontal and middle frontal gyri in XR-NTX-treated individuals, suggesting that XR -NTX attenuates the salience of alcohol- related cues.

Inhalation of Alcohol Vapor: Measurement and Implications.
TL;DR: A comprehensive, systematic literature review was conducted using Google Scholar and PubMed to examine manuscripts studying exposure to inhaled alcohol and measurement of biomarkers (biochemical or functional) associated with alcohol consumption in human participants.
A portable experimental apparatus for human olfactory fMRI experiments.

TL;DR: A new inexpensive, non-voluminous portable olfactometer adapted for human fMRI experiments, which shows a linear increase in both odor intensity perception and vapor concentration as a function of odorant concentration and reveals neural activation in typical olfactory areas.

Computational parallels between the biological olfactory pathway and its analogue 'the electronic nose' : part ii. sensor-based machine olfaction
TL;DR: The parallels that exist between the biological olfactory system and the electronic nose are examined and it is shown that the two systems share many similarities in their architectures and other properties, such as odour delivery, nonspecific sensor/receptor response, sensor-receptor preprocessing and content addressable memory (CAM) function.

Responsiveness to olfactory stimuli presented in sleep.
TL;DR: The data indicate that humans react behaviorally, autonomically and centrally to olfactory stimuli presented while sleeping, and the effect on responsivity of other durations, concentrations, and odors requires additional research.

Computational parallels between the biological olfactory pathway and its analogue `The Electronic Nose':: Part I. Biological olfaction
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluate and re-assess the architecture for an electronic nose, in view of the recent advances in understanding the key processing principals exploited by the olfactory bulb and cortex in the identification and characterisation of molecular stimuli.
