TL;DR: The successes of neural IR thus far are highlighted, obstacles to its wider adoption are cataloged, and potentially promising directions for future research are suggested.
Abstract: A recent “third wave” of neural network (NN) approaches now delivers state-of-the-art performance in many machine learning tasks, spanning speech recognition, computer vision, and natural language processing. Because these modern NNs often comprise multiple interconnected layers, work in this area is often referred to as deep learning. Recent years have witnessed an explosive growth of research into NN-based approaches to information retrieval (IR). A significant body of work has now been created. In this paper, we survey the current landscape of Neural IR research, paying special attention to the use of learned distributed representations of textual units. We highlight the successes of neural IR thus far, catalog obstacles to its wider adoption, and suggest potentially promising directions for future research.

TL;DR: A novel approach for context-aware music recommendation is proposed, which infers users’ preferences for music, and then recommends music pieces that fit their real-time requirements.
Abstract: Contextual factors greatly affect users' preferences for music, so they can benefit music recommendation and music retrieval. However, how to acquire and utilize the contextual information is still facing challenges. This paper proposes a novel approach for context-aware music recommendation, which infers users' preferences for music, and then recommends music pieces that fit their real-time requirements. Specifically, the proposed approach first learns the low dimensional representations of music pieces from users' music listening sequences using neural network models. Based on the learned representations, it then infers and models users' general and contextual preferences for music from users' historical listening records. Finally, music pieces in accordance with user's preferences are recommended to the target user. Extensive experiments are conducted on real world datasets to compare the proposed method with other state-of-the-art recommendation methods. The results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms those baselines, especially on sparse data.

TL;DR: The objective of the criticism raised by arkoun is to revive the dynamic and modern Islamic thought, to suit the development of various sciences.
Abstract: The root of Arkoun's epistemology of thought, originated from Arkoun's life that grew at the rapid development of science, both socio-humanities and the natural sciences of the Western world. This momentum is not wasted and left to pass without meaning. So it is not strange that in each of his writings thick with nuances of modern Western terms. The objective of the criticism raised by arkoun is to revive the dynamic and modern Islamic thought, to suit the development of various sciences. According to Arkoun, the understanding and exposure of Islamic studies, whether in the stage of introducing theory, creating concepts, or applying its teachings, must be explained using an interdisciplinary approach. Thus, Islamology can always be aligned with other scientific and rational modern sciences. Or in other languages, Arkoun aspires to an amalgamation of the most valuable element of Islamic reason and modern reason.

TL;DR: The results showed that lower level of TGF-β and improvement of immune system following resistance training may (at least partially) protect the elderly women against infectious and inflammatory diseases.
Abstract: Background: Ageing and physical inactivity can negatively affect immune system. On the contrary, a healthy lifestyle and physical activity can improve immune system and prevent from mild inflammatory diseases. Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGF-β) can play an important role in the regulation of immune function and inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of 8 weeks of theraband resistance training on the plasma level of TGF-β in the elderly women. Materials and Methods: Eighteen inactive elderly women were selected and randomly assigned to either theraband (n=10) and control (n=8) groups. The theraband group attended 24 exercise sessions conducted over an 8-week period (3 sessions/week). Exercise load was increased according to the color of theraband. The TGF-β level in plasma was measured by ELISA. Results: Mean±SD plasma level of TGF-β in the theraband group (39.42±9.46) significantly decreased compared to that in the control group (64.26±21.39) (P=0.031).Conclusion: The results showed that lower level of TGF-β and improvement of immune system following resistance training may (at least partially) protect the elderly women against infectious and inflammatory diseases.

TL;DR: This work proposes and investigates a systematic combination of document verboseness and length, and demonstrates that the new models never underperform existing models, while sometimes introducing statistically significantly better results, at no additional computational cost.
Abstract: Every information retrieval (IR) model embeds in its scoring function a form of term frequency (TF) quantification. The contribution of the term frequency is determined by the properties of the function of the chosen TF quantification, and by its TF normalization. The first defines how independent the occurrences of multiple terms are, while the second acts on mitigating the a priori probability of having a high term frequency in a document (estimation usually based on the document length). New test collections, coming from different domains (e.g. medical, legal), give evidence that not only document length, but in addition, verboseness of documents should be explicitly considered. Therefore we propose and investigate a systematic combination of document verboseness and length. To theoretically justify the combination, we show the duality between document verboseness and length. In addition, we investigate the duality between verboseness and other components of IR models. We test these new TF normalizations on four suitable test collections. We do this on a well defined spectrum of TF quantifications. Finally, based on the theoretical and experimental observations, we show how the two components of this new normalization, document verboseness and length, interact with each other. Our experiments demonstrate that the new models never underperform existing models, while sometimes introducing statistically significantly better results, at no additional computational cost.

TL;DR: This research proposes the $$({ CF})^2$$(CF)2 architecture, which uses local learning techniques to embed contextual awareness into collaborative filtering models, and demonstrates the impact of taking into account context in real-world datasets by higher accuracy of context-based models in comparison to random selection models.
Abstract: Recommender systems have dramatically changed the way we consume content. Internet applications rely on these systems to help users navigate among the ever-increasing number of choices available. However, most current systems ignore the fact that user preferences can change according to context, resulting in recommendations that do not fit user interests. This research addresses these issues by proposing the $$({ CF})^2$$ architecture, which uses local learning techniques to embed contextual awareness into collaborative filtering models. The proposed architecture is demonstrated on two large-scale case studies involving over 130 million and over 7 million unique samples, respectively. Results show that contextual models trained with a small fraction of the data provided similar accuracy to collaborative filtering models trained with the complete dataset. Moreover, the impact of taking into account context in real-world datasets has been demonstrated by higher accuracy of context-based models in comparison to random selection models.

TL;DR: Chronic inflammation has correlation with status of serum Vitamin D3 deficiency in individuals exposed to sulfur mustard, and vitamin D3 levels as a modulatory agent could first regulate inflammatory interactions, then switch to suppress inflammatory mechanisms.
Abstract: Background: Inflammatory responses in individuals exposed to sulfur mustard occur in some organs such as lung, skin and eyes. These organs manifest overreaction in cellular and humoral immune responses. Over a long period, the immune responses often continues toward chronic inflammatory processes with some interventions. Obviously some elements have been deregulated. Therefore, this study evaluated Vitamin D3 levels as a modulatory agent that could first regulate inflammatory interactions, then switch to suppress inflammatory mechanisms. Several studies showed that Vitamin D3 plays an undeniable role in suppressing inflammatory responses. In addition, some studies showed that calcium and phosphorus could play some role in inflammatory responses, too. Also, levels of serum calcium and phosphorus are associated with serum Vitamin D3 level, because it promotes absorption and reabsorption of calcium and phosphorus in intestine and kidney.Materials and Methods: Levels of vitamin D3, calcium and phosphorus were measured by ELISA and spectrophotometric method, respectively. 114 exposed individuals as case group and 79 unexposed as control group were evaluated. Results: The results showed that the level of serum Vitamin D3 is low in individuals exposed to sulfur mustard (PConclusion: According to our findings, chronic inflammation has correlation with status of serum Vitamin D3 deficiency in individuals exposed to sulfur mustard.

TL;DR: Several reports support the use of immunotherapeutic drugs in treatment of cancers through regulating the immune response and boosting the microenvironments toward T helper (Th1) cells.
Abstract: Over the past decade, it was widely accepted that some chemotherapeutic drugs can be combined with immunotherapeutic drugs in treatment of cancer. Chemotherapeutic drugs can induce apoptosis in the tumor cell and at the same time stimulate the immune response. Several reports support the use immunomodulators in treatment of cancers through regulating the immune response and boosting the microenvironments toward T helper (Th1) cells. At the same time these molecule attach to transferrin-Fe2+ and circulate in the blood vessels until they find transferin receptors which are highly detected in tumor cells and induce apoptosis in tumor cells.

TL;DR: Aloe vera extract could enhance macrophage activity through increase in TNF-α and IL-12 cytokines in Candida albicans infections, which could stimulate innate immune responses to eliminate Candidaalbicans.
Abstract: Background: Based on the reports, Aloe vera extract, a herbal medicine, has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Also, this medicinal plant has considerable effects on innate immunity through cytokine secretion which resist fungal infections such as Candida albicans. Moreover, Aloe vera is considered as immunomodulatory agent and regulate inflammatory responses. Materials and Methods: In this study, twenty Balb/c mice were divided into five groups: four groups of infected mice with Candida albicans treated with different doses of Aloe vera extract and one healthy control group. Then, macrophage vital activity was measured by NBT assay. Nitric Oxide (NO) production as representative of macrophage activity was assayed by MTT test. Tumor Necrosis Factor alpha (TNF-α) and Interleukin-12 (IL-12) cytokines were measured by ELISA assay. Results: Based on our study results, macrophage vital activity and NO production decreased significantly. However, TNF-α and IL-12 cytokines increased significantly in mice model infected by Candida albicans. Conclusion: Aloe vera extract could enhance macrophage activity through increase in TNF-α and IL-12 cytokines in Candida albicans infections. Therefore, Aloe vera could stimulate innate immune responses to eliminate Candida albicans.
