Combine harvesters are important for modern agriculture since they can significantly increase the efficiency of grain harvesting process. The cleaning unit is one of the core components of the combine harvester and it can be considered as the 'digestive system' of a machine. In recent years, new cleaning devices and intelligent technology have emerged to increase the harvesting adaptability for different crops, field conditions and to improve harvesting efficiency. This review provides an overview of cleaning unit structures and the optimisation methods that have been used to improve the cleaning performance. It introduces the structures of cleaning unit and examines the arrangements of the grain pan, fan, and sieve structures. It examines the effects of fan geometries on airflow velocity distribution; numerical simulation and experimental methods for airflow velocity measurement; material movement analysis and determination of pressure drop due to the material layer and chaffer sieve; sensors to acquire the working status and control methods for adjusting the parameter settings. From the literatures, it can be realised that to obtain good cleaning performance, proper cleaning structures and combinations should be selected carefully. In addition, the development of sensors and controllers for cleaning units should focus on their adaptability for different crops and field conditions. Further studies are needed to determine the thresholds for these indicators, the introduction of deep learning and artificial intelligence algorithms could overcome the uncertainty and non-linearity and improve the cleaning performance. 

Development of cleaning systems for combine harvesters: A review

. In order to improve the cleaning quality and efficiency of a rice combine harvester, a cleaning system comprising a cen-trifugal fan and four outlet ducts was developed. Three multi-duct centrifugal fans with the same rotor but different up-per outlet positions and volute walls were studied numerically and experimentally to evaluate the impact of the upper outlet on the inner flow field distribution of the fan. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to analyze the veloc-ity profiles, flow rate, internal velocity, and pressure of the centrifugal fan. Experiments were performed using hot-wire anemometers to measure the velocity at the four outlets of the fan to validate the simulations. CFD simulations were used to perform detailed flow visualization, velocity profile and flow rate estimation, and internal velocity field and pressure field analysis. Special attention was paid to the effect of the upper outlet on the inner flow field distribution and on achieving a balanced airflow division between the four outlets. It was observed that the internal field distribu-tion and the mass flow rate division between the four outlets can be greatly influenced by the upper outlet position. The optimal structure of the multi-duct centrifugal fan was obtained for the rice combine.

Numerical and experimental analysis of airflow in a multi-duct cleaning system for a rice combine harvester

The utility model discloses an efficient cleaning device of a turbine multi-air-duct fan. The device mainly comprises a material conveying and evenly distributing device, a grain and redundant impurity conveying device, a cleaning device body and a transmission device; the device meets the efficient cleaning requirement of crops with the large feed quantity; the turbine multi-air-duct fan is high in flow, uniform in air speed in an air outlet, stable in air flow, high in attenuation-resisting capability, compact in structure and high in energy efficiency ratio; due to shaking of a material vibrating screen and repeated winnowing effects of the turbine multi-air-duct fan, clean grains fall into a grain auger and enters a grain tank, and part of redundant impurities fall into a secondary redundant impurity auger, are evenly distributed through a return stroke plate and enter a screen surface again to be re-cleaned. The device can meet efficient high-performance cleaning work of crops, such as wheat, rice, oilseed rapes, maize and soybeans, of the feeding quantity of 5 to 8kg/s; the device is small in cleaning loss, low in impurity percentage, high in work efficiency and compact in structure.

Efficient cleaning device of turbine multi-air-duct fan

The utility model relates to a reel adjusting device used for a combine harvester. The reel adjusting device comprises a header rack, a reel support, a height adjusting and measuring device, a front-back adjusting and measuring device, a revolving speed adjusting and measuring device and a reel. The device mainly comprises a material conveying uniform distribution device, a grain and impurity conveyer device, a cleaning device and a transmission device, and meets the requirement on high-efficiency cleaning of crops in a large feed quantity; the turbo multi-duct blower is large in flow, uniform in air speed at an air outlet, stable in airflow, high in anti-attenuation capacity, compact in structure and high in energy efficiency ratio; through the vibration of a material vibrating screen and multiple winnowing of the turbo multi-duct blower, clean grains fall into a grain auger and enter a grain box, and partial impurities fall into a secondary impurity auger, are uniformly distributed by a return plate and enter a screen surface to realize recleaning. The high-efficiency cleaning device can meet the requirement on high-efficiency high-performance cleaning operation of wheat, rice, rape, corn, soybean and other crops in the feed quantity of 5-8kg/s, and is small in cleaning loss, low in impurity rate, high in operating efficiency and compact in structure.
