ϵ-Caprolactam anionic homopolymerization was studied in the presence of different model activators. On the basis of the results ester- and isocyanate-terminated polymers were used as macroactivators and nylon-6–polyvinyl or polydiene block copolymers were synthesized in high yields. The physical properties and morphology of a nylon–polybutadiene triblock copolymer were characterized.

Free-radical crosslinking copolymerization of styrene/unsaturated polyester resins: 1. Phase separation and microgel formation

An important feature of free radical crosslinking polymerization of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) resin is the formation of heterogeneous structure through intramolecular reaction. Such structure formation affects not only the cure behavior and rheological changes of the resin but also the physical properties of the formed polymers. In this study, the reaction kinetics, morphological changes, and characteristics of formed polymers were examined by a differential scanning calorimeter, a Rheometrics Dynamic Analyzer, a dynamic light scattering goniometer, and a Fourier transfer infrared spectrometer. Experimental data showed the formation of bimodal polymers before gelation. These polymers are partially crosslinked and can be considered as microgel particles. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Telechelic polystyrene with glycylamino groups as active chain ends was prepared and used as initiator for the polymerization of the NCA of methyl D-glutamate [4-(2-methoxycarbonyl)ethyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2,5-dione] (1). Using propionitrile or preferably ethyl acetate as solvent, the stepwise polymerization of the NCA 1 proceeded with a sufficiently high initiator efficiency, giving ABA-type block copolymers consisting of polystyrene and polypeptide segments.

Polymerization of diallyl phthalate and gelation of poly(diallyl phthalate) by copolymerization with styrene

Polystyrene with N-acyl pyrrolidone groups at both ends was prepared by radical polymerization with 4,4′-azobis(pyrrolidone 4-cyanovalerate). With this polystyrene as the initiator, the anionic polymerization of α-pyrrolidone was carried out, to give the well-defined ABA-type block copolymers of α-pyrrolidone and styrene. The obtained copolymers were characterized by their composition, reduced viscosity, and initiation efficiency. Initiation efficiency was sufficiently high, and the stepwise propagation process was verified so far as the polymerization time was not so long. The results of the polymerization in a high-vacuum system were compared with those in a low-vacuum system, and some differences were observed owing to the effect of water.
