Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and hypoxia inhibit salmonid gastrointestinal motility: evidence for H2S as an oxygen sensor
Ryan A. Dombkowski,Marie G. Naylor,Emma Shoemaker,Michelle Smith,Eric R. DeLeon,Eric R. DeLeon,Gilbrian F. Stoy,Gilbrian F. Stoy,Yan Gao,Kenneth R. Olson +9 more
TL;DR: The inhibitory effects of H2S on the GI tract of a non-mammalian vertebrate are identical to those reported in mammals and they provide further evidence that H1S is a key mediator of the hypoxic response in a variety of O2-sensitive tissues.
Green tea polyphenolic antioxidants oxidize hydrogen sulfide to thiosulfate and polysulfides: A possible new mechanism underpinning their biological action
Kenneth R. Olson,Kenneth R. Olson,Austin Briggs,Monesh Devireddy,Nicholas A. Iovino,Nicole C. Skora,Jenna Whelan,Brian P. Villa,Xiaotong Yuan,Varun Mannam,Scott S. Howard,Yan Gao,Magdalena Minnion,Martin Feelisch +13 more
TL;DR: It is shown that popular Japanese and Chinese green teas and select catechins all catalytically oxidize hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to polysulfides with the potency of EGC > EGCG >> EG, suggesting green tea also acts as powerful pro-oxidant in vivo.

Effects of carbon monoxide on trout and lamprey vessels.
Ryan A. Dombkowski,Nathan L. Whitfield,Nathan L. Whitfield,Roberto Motterlini,Yan Gao,Kenneth R. Olson +5 more
TL;DR: The results implicate an active HO/CO pathway in trout vessels having an impact on resting vessel tone and CO-induced vasoactivity that is at least partially mediated by soluble guanylyl cyclase.
Manganese Porphyrin-Based SOD Mimetics Produce Polysulfides from Hydrogen Sulfide.
Kenneth R. Olson,Yan Gao,Faihaan Arif,Shivali Patel,Xiaotong Yuan,Varun Mannam,Scott S. Howard,Ines Batinic-Haberle,Jon M. Fukuto,Magdalena Minnion,Martin Feelisch,Karl D. Straub +11 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that MnPs can become efficacious activators of a variety of cytoprotective processes by acting as sulfide oxidation catalysts generating per/polysulfides.

Oxidation of Hydrogen Sulfide by Quinones: How Polyphenols Initiate Their Cytoprotective Effects.
TL;DR: In this article, the effects of HQs on sulfur metabolism using H2S- and polysulfide-specific fluorophores (AzMC and SSP4, respectively) and thiosulfate sensitive silver nanoparticles (AgNP).
