The paper presents a survey and analysis on the current status and concerns of Internet of things (IoT) security. The IoT framework aspires to connect anyone with anything at anywhere. IoT typically has a three layers architecture consisting of Perception, Network, and Application layers. A number of security principles should be enforced at each layer to achieve a secure IoT realization. The future of IoT framework can only be ensured if the security issues associated with it are addressed and resolved. Many researchers have attempted to address the security concerns specific to IoT layers and devices by implementing corresponding countermeasures. This paper presents an overview of security principles, technological and security challenges, proposed countermeasures, and the future directions for securing the IoT.

Internet of things (IoT) security: Current status, challenges and prospective measures

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the ability to provide everyday devices with a way of identification and another way for communication with each other. The spectrum of IoT application domains is very large including smart homes, smart cities, wearables, e-health, etc. Consequently, tens and even hundreds of billions of devices will be connected. Such devices will have smart capabilities to collect, analyze and even make decisions without any human interaction. Security is a supreme requirement in such circumstances, and in particular authentication is of high interest given the damage that could happen from a malicious unauthenticated device in an IoT system. This paper gives a near complete and up-to-date view of the IoT authentication field. It provides a summary of a large range of authentication protocols proposed in the literature. Using a multi-criteria classification previously introduced in our work, it compares and evaluates the proposed authentication protocols, showing their strengths and weaknesses, which constitutes a fundamental first step for researchers and developers addressing this domain.

A Survey of Internet of Things (IoT) Authentication Schemes

The increasing uptake of smart home appliances, such as lights, smoke-alarms, power switches, baby monitors, and weighing scales, raises privacy and security concerns at unprecedented scale, allowing legitimate and illegitimate entities to snoop and intrude into the family's activities. In this paper we first illustrate these threats using real devices currently available in the market. We then argue that as more such devices emerge, the attack vectors increase, and ensuring privacy/security of the house becomes more challenging. We therefore advocate that device-level protections be augmented with network-level security solutions, that can monitor network activity to detect suspicious behavior. We further propose that software defined networking technology be used to dynamically block/quarantine devices, based on their network activity and on the context within the house such as time-of-day or occupancy-level. We believe our network-centric approach can augment device-centric security for the emerging smart-home.

Network-level security and privacy control for smart-home IoT devices

The rise of ransomware and emerging security challenges in the Internet of Things

Recently Internet of Things (IoT) attains tremendous popularity, although this promising technology leads to a variety of security obstacles. The conventional solutions do not suit the new dilemmas brought by the IoT ecosystem. Conversely, Artificial Immune Systems (AIS) is intelligent and adaptive systems mimic the human immune system which holds desirable properties for such a dynamic environment and provides an opportunity to improve IoT security. In this work, we develop a novel hybrid Deep Learning and Dendritic Cell Algorithm (DeepDCA) in the context of an Intrusion Detection System (IDS). The framework adopts Dendritic Cell Algorithm (DCA) and Self Normalizing Neural Network (SNN). The aim of this research is to classify IoT intrusion and minimize the false alarm generation. Also, automate and smooth the signal extraction phase which improves the classification performance. The proposed IDS selects the convenient set of features from the IoT-Bot dataset, performs signal categorization using the SNN then use the DCA for classification. The experimentation results show that DeepDCA performed well in detecting the IoT attacks with a high detection rate demonstrating over 98.73% accuracy and low false-positive rate. Also, we compared these results with State-of-the-art techniques, which showed that our model is capable of performing better classification tasks than SVM, NB, KNN, and MLP. We plan to carry out further experiments to verify the framework using a more challenging dataset and make further comparisons with other signal extraction approaches. Also, involve in real-time (online) attack detection.

DeepDCA: Novel Network-Based Detection of IoT Attacks Using Artificial Immune System

With the development of Internet of Things (IOT), there are more and more concerns about the security of IOT. In terms of security of Internet, the security framework of Internet can not provide a completely solution to solve all security problems in IOT [1]. This paper describes the security structure of sensor layer, network layer, and application layer in IOT. This thesis intends to analyze the security features of sensor layer, and then presents dynamic variable cipher security certificate, a new method of ID authentication among node and node in sensor layer. This certificate provides a method of “one time one cipher” between communicating parties. It's a lightweight encryption or decryption method, using time stamp technology, timeliness in the two communication partners is guaranteed. In general, dynamic variable cipher security certificate can be well applied to the communication among sensor nodes in IOT.
