An example method disclosed herein includes marking a scaling status of a virtual machine included in a first node deployed in the computing environment, the first node executing a first component of the application, the scaling status of the virtual machine indicating a change in a number of virtual machines included in the first node. The example method also includes identifying a second node including a dependency with the virtual machine, the second node deployed in the computing environment. The example method also includes updating configuration information associated with the second node based on the scaling status of the virtual machine, the configuration information including a reference to the virtual machine.

In an embodiment, a transaction token maintains statues of transaction to a database in a first data structure and a second data structure. The first data structure includes a plurality of identifiers respectively corresponding to the transactions to the database and a corresponding status of each identifier indicating whether a given transaction is open or closed, wherein the plurality of identifiers is maintained below a threshold number of identifiers. The second data structure includes a plurality of identifiers of transactions to the database beyond the threshold and whose status is open.

An intermediary server platform, between the user of the simulation task and the hardware providers on which the simulation task is executed, includes a cluster service that provisions computing resources on hardware provider platforms, an application service that configures the simulation application in accordance with application-imposed constraints, an application monitoring service that monitors execution of the simulation task for computing resource change indicators (including computing resource utilization and application-specific information extracted from output files generated by the simulation application) as well as restart files, and a computing resource evaluation engine that determines when a change in computing resources is warranted.

Techniques are provided for executing a software product that includes a plurality of machine instructions and that is associated with a measured usage pricing model. The executing of the software product includes tracking the usage of one or more computing resources for executing the software product in accordance with the associated measured pricing model. The executing also includes, for each of multiple sets of machine instructions, determining whether the set is associated with a token indicating that the set is a set of diagnostic machine instructions related to the executing of the software product. For each of those multiple sets of machine instructions, the executing of the software product further includes, responsive to a determination that the set of machine instructions is associated with the token, not tracking the usage of the one or more computing resources during execution of that set of diagnostic machine instructions.
