A color image pickup device has a solid-state image sensing element, a complementary color type mosaic filter, and a signal processing circuit which eliminates green highlights and provides accurate hue reproduction for all colors. Gamma compensation circuits process wide- and narrow-band luminance signals and two color signals derived from an output of the image sensing element. The gamma-compensated wide-band luminance signal is combined with a color subcarrier signal modulated by two color-difference signals formed from the gamma-compensated narrow-band luminance signal and the gamma-compensated color signals. The amplitude of the combined signal is limited by a white clip circuit. In one embodiment of the invention, the image sensing element is connected to the signal processing circuit by a cable of shielded lines. Waveform compensation circuits compensate in advance for deformation of the waveform of drive pulses for the image sensing element which occurs when the drive pulses are transmitted through the shielded lines. The external conductors of the shielded lines can be used to transmit power to the image sensing element.

A color video camera using a solid-state image pickup device having filters of the complementary color system consisting of a filter to transmit the light of all colors, a filter to transmit the yellow light, a filter to transmit the cyan light, and a filter to transmit the green light can obtain color signals having no color aliasing by selecting the conditions of the arithmetic operating processes of the signals corresponding to the respective filters. In these conditions, assuming that the signals corresponding to the four kinds of filters are represented by W, Ye, Cy and G in correspondence to the colors of the respective filters, a red signal and a blue signal are produced by the arithmetic operations represented by the following expressions: R=αW-βCy+γYe-δG B=α'W+β'Cy-γ'Ye-δ'G wherein the respective arithmetic operational ratios α, β, γ, δ, α', β', γ', and δ' are set so as to satisfy the condition of the following expression: αW+βCy=γYe+δG or α'W+γ'Ye=β'Cy+δ'G. This setting is realized by setting the amplification factors of the amplifiers to amplify the respective signals which are output in correspondence to the respective filters so as to meet this condition and by adding and subtracting those outputs.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct the variation of practical sensitivity in every other horizontal period which is caused by the mixture of pixels and to perform moire suppression by changing the addition ratio of a luminance signal in every other horizontal period. SOLUTION: Two adjacent lines among vertical gate lines 101 to 104 are selected and read during a certain horizontal period. Entire pixel element scan is finished during one field by repeating this scan. Although two adjacent lines are simultaneously selected in the next one field in the same way, a combination of the two selected lines is shifted from the preceding combination by one line to be a combination of the two adjacent lines, and a signal of the two lines is simultaneously read. In such cases, because each vertical signal line 111 to 116 are connected to different output terminals 131 and 132 every other row through horizontal switches 121 to 126, each mixed signal, i.e., W and Cy, and G and Cy from the terminal 131 and G and Ye, and W and Ye from the terminal 132 are alternately outputted in every other horizontal period. Though this signal is added by prescribed addition ratio inside a luminance signal generating circuit after amplifying it so that a luminance signal can be generated, the addition ratio is changed in every other horizontal period in such cases.

The plurality of lines following the first direction include a first line and a second line which are adjacent to each other, and the reading circuit of the pixel of the first line and the reading circuit of the pixel of the second line are arranged between the photoelectric conversion element of the pixel of the first line and the photoelectric conversion element of the pixel of the second line. The direction of currents flowing through the transistor of the reading circuit of the pixel of the first line is the same as the direction of currents flowing through the transistor of the reading circuit of the pixel of the second line.

CONSTITUTION:A signal from the solid-state image pickup element 1 where yellow Ye, cyan Cy and transparent color W photoelectric converting elements are arranged alternately in horizontal and vertical directions is inputted directly and through a delay device 2 for one horizontal scanning period H to sample hold circuits 3-7 respectively. Picture element signals of Cy-Ye are extracted from the circuit 4, the signals of Ye-Cy are extracted from the circuit 6, and the W picture element signals are extracted from the circuits 5, 7, the signals are shared to the Cy, Ye and W only at each 1H by switches 8, 9 and led to saturation amplifier circuits 11-14. All the picture element signals from the circuit 3 and the W signal from the circuit 5 are led to the saturation amplifier circuits 10, 20 respectively. The circuits 10-14, and 20 are saturated by the same white luminous amount and its output is restored to the original signal ratio by amplifier circuits 15-19 and 21 having the inverse characteristic. The outputs of the circuits 16, 17 and the circuits 18, 19 are subtracted to output red and blue colors and yellow color is outputted by adding the outputs of the circuits 15, 25 via a filter.
