Time division multiple access (TDMA) multiplexing of ATM cells from thousands of residential customers toward the common feeder of a passive optical network (SuperPON) tree obviates the need for an equal number of optical line terminations (OLTs). All upstream transmissions converge by means of the passive splitters/combiners to just one OLT unit which serves all by time sharing. The ability to reach such a high splitting ratio became possible by the development of bursty mode optical amplifiers (OAs). In addition, OAs make possible a 100-km-long feeder which can bypass the local exchange into the first core switch, bringing further savings to both initial and running costs. These techniques allow SuperPONs to lower the access cost per customer, holding for the promise of ushering into domestic local loops the photonics revolution which has already transformed the transmission plant. These savings, however, can only be realized under the assumption that the system can accept high loading before exceeding the limits of quality of service (QoS) requirements and without distorting the egress traffic in a way that jeopardizes the statistical estimates on which ATM connection acceptance was based. Solutions to the problem of traffic arbitration, respecting the idiosyncrasies of each traffic class and suitable for fast implementation, are offered.

TDMA multiplexing of ATM cells in a residential access SuperPON

The Access Network (AN) part of the B-ISDN aims at concentrating the traffic of a number of different User Network Interfaces (UNIs) and routing this traffic to the appropriate Service Node (SN) through a broadband V interface (referred as VB). Naturally, the emphasis on AN design is to provide cost-efficient implementations without degrading the agreed Quality of Service (QoS). This is both the reduction of the AN physical equipment and in the limitations imposed on the AN functionality such as the inability to interpret signaling information. The lack of connection-related information forces the establishment of several AN internal mechanisms that compensate for the effects of traffic concentration. In our attempt to generalize and extend results and experiences obtained from out in the specification, design and implementation of an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based AN, we introduce the concept of a real-time VB interface Control Protocol (V-CP). We demonstrate the V-CP ability to serve for a number of AN internal functions while preserving the highest possible degree of transparency to the SN. The V-CP services provide for the dynamic operation of the AN by conveying all those connection-related parameters required for dynamic resource allocation, traffic policing and routing in the AN, as well as information on the status of the AN before a new connection is accepted by the SN. The V-CP operates in real time on a connection by connection basis. This is reflected in its simple design making it considerably faster than usual management protocols.

Architectural and Control Aspects of the Multi-HostATM Subscriber Loop 1

Passive Optical Networks offer quite promising results in terms of cost, robustness, flexibility and traffic concentration. The addition of Optical Amplifiers, overcame the optical budget limitations of fully passive first generation technology, enabling the extension of the PONs to up to 15000 subscribers and a 100 km distance, creating the concept of SuperPONs currently at the development stage. The larger round trip delay, as well as the high number of subscribers, coupled with the strict traffic control dictates of ATM, create very complex traffic control and management problems but at the same time open the prospects of high multiplexing gain by aggregating many relatively small connections on a shared feeder. Novel solutions are required since the tree topology and the shared feeder create new problems not encountered in non-distributed multiplexers/concentrators. Methods to resolve the VPI/VCI conflicts on the shared medium, support OAM, ensure privacy and security, police the entry to the system, and the traffic engineering issues, are the focal points of this paper.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Efficient control of ATM traffic accessing broadband core networks via SuperPONs

A MAC protocol proposed for the access arbitration of passive optical networks with high splitting ratios and a high number of customers is presented. The protocol handles constant bit rate (CBR) services based on the predictability of arrivals while the rest of the bursty services are serviced by means of a reservation mechanism which allows adaptation of the permits to the bursty arrival pattern of the traffic. The dynamic control at cell level which can exploit the multiplexing gain prospects of the system and maximize system utilization is the key feature of the protocol. The permit distribution algorithm is easy to implement and based on a simple permit programming method without wasting more processing resources than is warranted by the coarse level of detail of the available control information.

The traffic concentration challenge in ATM PONs with a high splitting ratio

In recent years, the customer access network has witnessed a rapid development of new transport technologies. Especially, the development of Passive Optical Networks and High speed Digital Subscriber Loop technologies may have a large impact, as they provide cost effective means for gradual introduction of new services in the access network. At the same time, a series of new services and applications are maturing. Computer and consumer industry have discovered multimedia (eg. CD-1). Video distribution services are evolving to fully interactive Video On Demand (VOD, dial tone video) capabilities. These applications need a bandwidth of at least 1.5 Mbit/s. The precise bandwidth requirements are, however, yet unknown. Both multimedia terminals and VOD set-top units will be available and low cost in the short future. For the transport of these video related service, the operator has basically the choice between twisted pair, coax, fiber and radio based access networks, or any combination of the rn. Most access networks today are largely copper based, but fiber is gradually being introduced to cope with the increasing bandwidth demands. In this paper, an access network is described that is capable of mixing these different transport media at different bit rates, using a common multiplexing / concentration scheme. Therefore, it can easily adapt to the multitude of local access topologies cun-ently in use. At the same time, it provides the necessary bandwidth flexibility to support the new services in an efficient way. The system is called Integrated Broadband Access (IBA), as it provides a common access platform for all services, narrowband and broadband, and as it offers the possibility to combine the differrent transmission techniques in a common access architecture. The proposed solution is an extension of the APON system, an ATM based FITL system, as presented in Verbiest et al (1). In the first section, the generic functionality of today's access networks are discussed. Then the overall characteristics of the proposed (IBA are discussed, with the emphasis on the multiplexing functionality and the bandwidth flexibility. Single stage and multiple stage multiplexers are discussed. Finally, a number of applications are discussed, and conclusions are drawn.
