Stable Isotopes Reveal Widespread Anaerobic Methane Oxidation Across Latitude and Peatland Type
Varun Gupta,Kurt A. Smemo,Joseph B. Yavitt,David A. Fowle,Brian A. Branfireun,Nathan Basiliko +5 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated for the first time that AOM is a widespread and quantitatively important process across many peatland types and that anabolic microbial assimilation of CH4-C occurs and that the primary mechanism of C assimilation remains uncertain.

Treatment of oil sands process affected waters by constructed wetlands: Evaluation of designs and plant types
Monique C. Simair,Joanne L. Parrott,Mignon le Roux,Varun Gupta,Richard A. Frank,Kerry M. Peru,Chukwuemeka Ajaero,Dena W. McMartin,John V. Headley +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive comparison of constructed wetland treatment systems (CWTS) performance operated with both synthetic OSPW and OSPw for four CWTS designs differing in plant type, aeration, flow path, water depth, and substrate type.

Shallow floating treatment wetland capable of sulfate reduction in acid mine drainage impacted waters in a northern climate
TL;DR: This study designed a novel FTW with 20 cm soil profile to test its ability to sustain anaerobic microbial processes, such as iron and sulfate reduction and remain functional after freezing conditions of winter months, and estimated that during its lifetime, one shallow FTW can treat ~61 m3 of sulfate-rich water, thus offering an alternative way to capture sulfate and other metals from mining-impacted waters.

Bringing guest scientists to the university biology classroom via the web.
Nathan Basiliko,Varun Gupta +1 more
TL;DR: An initiative to bring national and international guest scientists to undergraduate and introductory graduate classrooms via web videoconferencing to facilitate interesting and effective research-informed teaching is described.

Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane in Northern Peatlands
Varun Gupta
- 08 Dec 2011
TL;DR: In this article, anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in peatlands was investigated using 13 carbon isotope tracers and found that AOM was ubiquitous process across North American sites and dominant in fens over bogs, however carbon derived from methane was similar in both types of peatland ecosystems.
