Global climatic change is predicted to result in certain areas of the earth’s surface becoming hotter and drier. These spatially durable changes in climate will likely have negative impacts on the productivity of many plant species that are poorly adapted to increasing air:leaf vapor pressure deficits. However, more that 6% of vascular plants have evolved crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) as a photosynthetic adaptation to hotter and drier climates. This specialized mode of photosynthesis exploits a temporal CO2 pump with nocturnal CO2 uptake and concentration to reduce photorespiration, improve water-use efficiency (WUE), and optimize the adaptability of plants to hotter and drier climates. CAM species have a suite of physiological and anatomical adaptations that make them resilient to extreme heat and high insolation including tissue succulence, water-storage and water-capture strategies to attenuate drought, and thick cuticles, epicuticular wax, low stomatal density, high stomatal responsiveness, UV-light protection, and shallow rectifier-like roots to limit water loss under conditions of water deficit. Various modeling approaches have been developed to estimate the growth potential of CAM species under current and future climatic conditions.

Chapter 10 Climate Change Responses and Adaptations in Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) Plants

The objective of this study was to determine the photochemical efficiency of ‘Gigante’ cactus pear cultivated under different spacings and bovine manure doses in the semi-arid region. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design in a 4 x 3 x 7 factorial scheme, with three replicates. The first factor consisted of four doses of organic fertilization (0, 30, 60 and 90 Mg ha-1 year-1 of bovine manure), the second one, of three spacings (1.0 x 0.5, 2.0 x 0.25 and 3.0 x 1.0 x 0.25 m) and the third one of seven reading times (6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 h). Chlorophyll a fluorescence readings were taken in cactus pear cladodes in the dry and rainy seasons using a pulse-modulated fluorometer. Cladodes of ‘Gigante’ cactus pear cultivated under different spacings and bovine manure doses undergo changes in photosystem II during the dry season under the physiographic conditions of the semi-arid region in Bahia. During the rainy season in the semi-arid region, the photosynthetic yield in cactus pear cladodes is considered ideal.

Opuntia ficus-indica (OFI) tree and orchards efficiency has been poorly studied, in terms of relation between orchard lay out, light interception, and cropping efficiency. Apparently, there is no other way to increase orchard production than increasing the number either of trees ha-1 or fertile shoots tree-1, considering that a fruit count higher than 6-7 cladode-1 reduces fruit harvest size. The first option requires a reduction of unit tree size and canopy volume. The second option implies the use of large trees that often reduce their efficiency 12-15 years after planting. In 15-year-old OFI trees spaced 6 5 m apart trained to a globe and 2.5-3.0 m high, stem area index (SAI) calculated on the ground surface area covered by the tree was 2.9 and 6.5, respectively, for most active 1- and 2-year-old cladodes and whole canopy surface area. Fruit productivity and carbon gain of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. trees

Supplementary irrigation can be strategic for forage cactus, aiming to guarantee higher levels of productivity and economic return. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the growth dynamics, productivity, evapotranspiration, and water economy indices of three forage cactus clones under different water regimes. The study was carried out in the Brazilian semi-arid region during two cycles between 2020 and 2022. Clones of forage cactus Orelha de Elefante Mexicana—OEM (Opuntia stricta (Haw.) Haw.) were evaluated; IPA Sertânia—IPA and Miúda—MIU (both species Nopalea cochenillifera (L.) Salm-Dyck) were subjected to four water regimes: rainfed and three irrigation depths (4, 8 and 12 mm). Growth dynamics and evapotranspiration were evaluated throughout the cycles, and productivity and water economy indices were based on data from the harvest time. The OEM clone showed higher dry matter productivity (21.8 Mg ha−1). The MIU clone, when intended for seed sales, presented a higher economic return (USD 20,823.33). The use of irrigation brought forward the cutting time and reduced water saving rates. With this, it can be concluded that the increase in water availability in cactus increases water consumption and reduces economic-water indices but brings important productive returns.
