Methods and apparatus for activating telephone services in response to speech are described. A directory including names is maintained for each customer. A speaker dependent speech template and a telephone number for each name, is maintained as part of each customer's directory. Speaker independent speech templates are used for recognizing commands. The present invention has the advantage of permitting a customer to place a call by speaking a person's name which serves as a destination identifier without having to speak an additional command or steering word to place the call. This is achieved by treating the receipt of a spoken name in the absence of a command as an implicit command to place a call. Explicit speaker independent commands are used to invoke features or services other than call placement. Speaker independent and speaker dependent speech recognition are performed on a customer's speech in parallel. An arbiter is used to decide which function or service should be performed when an apparent conflict arises as a result of both the speaker dependent and speaker independent speech recognition step outputs. Stochastic grammars, word spotting and/or out-of-vocabulary rejection are used as part of the speech recognition process to provide a user friendly interface which permits the use of spontaneous speech. Voice verification is performed on a selective basis where security is of concern.

A mail sorter (22) includes an imaging device (60) to generate a plurality of images each corresponding to one of the plurality of mail pieces (36). The mail sorter (22) performs a character recognition routine on each of the images to sort a number of the mail pieces (36) and identify one of the mail pieces as being unsortable by the routine. An operator input processing subsystem (24) includes a number of stations (74). These stations (74) each include a display and a voice input device. The subsystem (24) responds to the mail sorter (22) to route the images to the stations (74). One of the stations (74) is operable to display one of the images on its corresponding display device and receive vocal input from an operator with its corresponding voice input device in response to viewing the image. The subsystem (24) executes a voice recognition routine to determine address information from the vocal input and provides this information to the mail sorter (22) to sort a corresponding one of the mail pieces (36).

Mail processing systems and methods

A novel voice-enabled directory look-up system is disclosed. In one embodiment, an operator reads the first few characters from each of the first and last names of a mail addressee. The system captures the speech as an audio signal, which is parsed into character position segments. The system determines one or more candidate characters that might have resulted in the audio signal for each character position segment. The system then expands the list of candidate characters for at least one character position to include one or more characters that sound like the original candidate characters for that character position. The candidate characters for the respective character positions are composed into a regular expression, which is applied using an inexact string matching look-up routine to a directory of records. Records with the best matches are returned in a menu for the operator. The operator selects the desired record from the menu. In another embodiment, an operator reads aloud the thousands and hundreds digits of the street number and the first three letters of the street name from a mail piece. A voice engine parses and decodes the speech into candidate characters for each character position. The system selects alternative characters that sound similar to candidate characters in a given character position. An inexact string matching routine retrieves records from a carrier route directory that match either a candidate character or an alternative character in each position of each data field.

Methods and apparatus for increasing the utility and interoperability of peripheral devices such as, voice mail devices and voice dialing platforms, used in communications systems are described. Methods of efficiently providing speech recognition functionality to multiple subscribes through the use of centralized speech recognition circuits are also described. One feature of the invention is directed to dynamically enabling/disabling an automatic connection feature whereby a central office switch connects a subscriber to an intelligent peripheral device in response to an off-hook condition. In one embodiment the C.O. switch's automatic peripheral device connection feature is only enabled when a voice mail IP has a waiting message thereby reducing or eliminating unnecessary connections to the voice mail IP. In order to support automatic connection to multiple IPs in response to an off-hook condition, in one embodiment a caller is connected to a control IP in response to an off-hook condition. The control IP then automatically connects the caller to one or more IPs as appropriate. In this manner a subscriber can access, e.g., sequentially, multiple IPs without having to dial the IPs or take other steps to affirmatively connect to the IPs. In one particular embodiment, speech recognition circuitry included in a control IP is used to provide speech recognition functionality when interacting with various IPs to which the subscriber was connected under control of the control IP. Thus the benefits of speech recognition capability can be provided to multiple IPs without the need for each individual IP to implement speech recognition functionality.

Methods and apparatus for increasing the utility and interoperability of peripheral devices in communications systems

Inputted voice signals are analyzed in units of syllables. Each syllable is compared with standard syllables preregistered in a memory and thereby recognized but corrections may be made on erroneous recognitions by referencing a dictionary or entering a command. Each standard pattern is associated with phonological information on the neighborhood in a voice signal from where it was extracted and may be updated by another pattern having the same phonological information. Temporal sequences of correct and erroneous recognitions of individual syllables as well as whole syllables are stored and referenced in determining whether a standard pattern should be updated. A maximum pattern number may be set for each syllable.

An acoustic processing unit for a speech recognition system is characterized in that the parameters are extracted from the speech data, including correlation functions, the zero crossing number of the original waveforms, the zero crossing number of the differential waveforms, and the average level of the waveforms. A suitable threshold is selected from a plurality of thresholds preliminarily stored, depending on the inputted speech volume level. The inputted speech volume level of the speaker is detected so that feedback of the detected volume level is obtained. The selected threshold set is then compared with each of the parameters to thereby make the phonemic classification. Because the plurality of threshold sets are thus automatically selected depending on the inputted speech volume level, flexible phonemic classification can be obtained to exactly detect the speech sections.
