A multiplex transmission system is disclosed in which, in the event of a problem between a converter and a client device on the transmitting side, the occurrence of this problem is reported to a converter on the receiving side without using specially dedicated frames. When a problem occurs between the converter on the transmitting side and an FC device on the transmitting side and the loss of optical input (LOS) or the loss of character synchronization (LCS) is detected, the converter on the transmitting side uses values that are not being used of the control character indicators of compression control codes in 64B/65B codes following 64B/65B conversion to transmit to the converter on the receiving side the alert information LOS or LCS. The converter on the receiving side, upon detecting this alert information, transmits a 10B-ERR signal or halts optical output to the FC device on the receiving side.

SOLUTION: Transmission devices 1 and 2 have transmission and reception processing sections 4-1 to 4-n, and 5-1 to 5-n corresponding to transmission lines 3-1 to 3-n and multiplexing processing sections 6 and 7 which multiplex user frames, and are each equipped with a generating means for a management frame containing state information on its station and reception state information on a frame from an opposite station, a transmitting means of inserting the management frame into an inter-frame gap and transmitting frames, an extracting means of receiving frames from the opposite station and extracting a management frame inserted into an inter-frame gap of user frames, and a decision means of deciding whether a fault occurs based upon state information on the opposite station and reception state information on transmission frames from its station at the opposite station by using the management frame extracted by the extracting means. SOLUTION: Control terminal equipment 6 is connected with a media converter 1 on a network side, which is connected with a media converter 2 on a subscriber side via an optical transmission line 3; a user data frame is transmitted via the optical transmission line 3 between the media converters 1 and 2; a maintenance control frame, which includes maintenance control information which the control terminal equipment 6 transmits and receives, is formed; the maintenance control frame is inserted into a guard time between user data frames and is transmitted via the optical transmission line 3; and the maintenance and control of a data transmission system are conducted by the control terminal equipment 6.

The OLT comprises a light receiving element 34 which receives a burst optical signal string having burst optical signals output from each ONU multiplexed therein, an amplitude level adjustment unit 36 which detects the received optical level of each burst optical signal for each of them, and an output optical level request unit 40 which, on the basis of the received optical level per burst optical signal, requests an output optical level of each ONU so that a difference in the received optical level between adjacent burst optical signals is equal to or less than a designated reference value. Each of the ONUs includes an output optical level control unit which, in response to the request from the output optical level request unit 40, controls the optical level of a burst optical signal to be transmitted.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an Ethernet (R) transmission apparatus which can accurately decide the normality of a line quality monitoring function so that the number of pseudo line error codes inserted for a test coincides with an error count value during error count period of the function, and also to provide a method for testing the function of the apparatus. SOLUTION: An error counter 1-3 counts error code during the count period determined by a timer 1-2 and informs the counted value to a manager 1-1. The synchronization signal generator 1-4 generates a synchronization signal synchronized with the error count period and transmits the generated signal to the opposing Ethernet transmission apparatus via a transmission line. The opposing Ethernet transmission apparatus detects the synchronization signal at a synchronization signal detector 1-5, instructs an error inserter 1-6 to insert a predetermined number of pseudo line error codes on the basis of the detection timing, and synchronizes the insert timing of the error code with the timing of the error code count period.
