Systems and methods for creating, modifying, interacting with and playing music are provided, particularly systems and methods employing a top-down process, where the user is provided with a musical composition that may be modified and interacted with and played and/or stored (for later play). The system preferably is provided in a handheld form factor, and a graphical display is provided to display status information, graphical representations of musical lanes or components which preferably vary in shape as musical parameters and the like are changed for particular instruments or musical components such as a microphone input or audio samples. An interactive auto-composition process preferably is utilized that employs musical rules and preferably a pseudo random number generator, which may also incorporate randomness introduced by timing of user input or the like, the user may then quickly begin creating desirable music in accordance with one or a variety of musical styles, with the user modifying the auto-composed (or previously created) musical composition, either for a real time performance and/or for storing and subsequent playback. The graphic information preferably is customizable by a user, such as by way of a companion software program, which preferably runs on a PC and is coupled to the system via an interface such as a USB port. A modified MIDI representation of music is employed, preferably, for example, in which musical rule information is embedded in MIDI pitch data, and in which sound samples may be synchronized with MIDI events in a desirable and more optimum manner. The system architecture preferably includes a microprocessor for controlling the overall system operation. A synthesizer/DSP preferably is provided in order to generate audio streams. Non-volatile memory preferably is provided for storing sound banks. Preferably removable non-volatile storage/memory is provided to store configuration files, song lists and samples, and optionally sound bank optimization or sound bank data. A codec preferably is provided for receiving microphone input and for providing audio output. A radio tuner preferably is provided so that output from the radio tuner may be mixed, for example, with auto-composed songs created by the system, which preferably includes a virtual radio mode of operation.

Systems and methods for creating, modifying, interacting with and playing musical compositions

A method for classification recognition of gestures and gesture primitives in a touch-based user interface. In an implementation the method comprises receiving tactile image data responsive to data generated from user touch of a user touch interface comprising a sensor array. The tactile image data is processed to create a plurality of numerical values responsive to data generated from the user touch interface. These numerical values are applied to a principle component analysis operation to produce a reduced-dimensionality data vector which is applied to a classifier having a plurality of classifier outputs interpretable as probabilities. The classifier outputs provide likelihoods that an execution gesture is from a collection of pre-defined gestures, and a decision test is used to produce a decision output indicating a gesture outcome useful in user interface applications. The arrangement can recognize single finger “6D” actions of roll, pitch, yaw, left-right, forward-back, and variations in applied pressure.

Sequential classification recognition of gesture primitives and window-based parameter smoothing for high dimensional touchpad (HDTP) user interfaces

A high dimensional touchpad (HDTP) controls a variety of computer windows systems and applications by detecting a user's finger movement in the left-right, forward-backward, roll, pitch, yaw, and downward pressure directions. Measurements obtained from the touchpad of at least two attributes of finger movement at two different time intervals are used to provide a first and a second finger position attribute used to control an application on an electronic device. The finger roll angle is determined by detecting the edge and the peak region of a finger contact area. Also, a visual color displayed in an application operating on an electronic device is controlled by a measured-angle value of a finger in contact with a touchpad.

Sensors, algorithms and applications for a high dimensional touchpad

A digital multi-media device provides features for a user unskilled in musical arts or sound handling techniques that provides automatic musical score composition in accordance with contained composition instructions. Stored sound samples and interfaces for obtaining external signals provide signals for merger with visual and sound presentations to obtain altered presentations either time shifted or in real time. In this fashion the user can create simulated radio stations for playback of prearranged and composed audio material. Further, the automatically composed musical score may be mixed with synthesized, digitized signals from the stored sound samples and external signals obtained through the device interfaces.

Interactive digital music recorder and player

This paper will describe the multi-user interactive music system known as the Jam-O-Drum developed at Interval Research Corporation.1 By combining velocity sensitive input devices and computer graphics imagery into an integrated tabletop surface, up to six simultaneous players are able to participate in a collaborative approach to musical improvisation. We demonstrate that this interactive music system embraces both the novice and musically trained participants by taking advantage of their intuitive abilities and social interaction skills. In this paper and accompanying video, we present conclusions from user testing of this device along with examples of interaction design methods and prototypes of interpretive musical and game-like development schemes. Our research was conducted in two phases with two different development teams and will accordingly be addressed herein as Phase One and Phase Two development.

A performance state of an performance operator such as a keyboard may be detected, so as to change the parameters on the basis of performance states detected at least for a current time and a given past time. This permits parameter control reflecting a changing real-time performance state. Alternatively, a parameter may be prepared in accordance with input performance information so that an accompaniment pattern is created on the basis of the prepared parameter. At least one of the parameters may be modulated in real time via a relatively simple operator such as a modulation wheel.
