A method and apparatus for assessing the visibility of differences between two input image sequences. The apparatus comprises a visual discrimination measure (112) having a retinal sampling section (330), a plurality of temporal filters (334, 335) and a spatial discrimination section (240). The retinal sampling section (330) applies a plurality of transformations to the input image sequences (310, 320) for simulating the image-processing properties of human vision. The temporal filters (334, 335) separate the sequences of retinal images into two temporal channels producing a lowpass temporal response and a bandpass temporal response. The spatial discrimination section (240) applies spatial processing to the temporal responses to produce an image metric (250) which is used to assess the visibility of differences between the two input image sequences.

A system for processing color information is based on carrying with color data, an indicator of the color space in which the data is represented. In this manner, the system is enabled to process color data from a variety of sources independent of the color space of the sources, because it is able to respond to the color space of a particular color value perform the necessary transformations to operate within any other arbitrary color and color space combination. The system provides for manipulating or combining colors independent of the source and destination color spaces. Also, the system operates on a per color component basis in user selected working color space, independent of the color space of the input or destination devices.

A graphics and video controller 105 is provided which includes a dual aperture interface 206 for receiving words of graphics and video pixel data, each word of such data associated with an address directing that word to be processed as either graphics or video data. Circuitry 200, 201, 202, 207, 208 is provided for writing a word of the pixel data received from the interface 206 to a one of the on- and off-screen memory areas corresponding to the address associated with the received word. Circuitry 201, 202 is provided for selectively retrieving graphics and video data from the on-screen and off-screen memory areas. A first pipeline 205 is provided for processing data received from the on-screen area of frame buffer 107 while a second pipeline 204 is provided for processing data retrieved from the off-screen area of the frame buffer.

A method and apparatus for reversibly transforming color, which is selected from a gamut of colors producible by the primaries of a color display device (20), into a perceptually uniform color space. The coordinates of the color space are readily convertible into internationally accepted standards for color measurement. Also provided, is a method for transforming the color space coordinates of a selected color into the corresponding relative primary intensity levels of the display device (20).

The apparatus (100) comprises a vision pre-processor (300), a virtual reference generator (304), a virtual distortion generator (306), and an image quality metric generator (308). The vision preprocessor (300) performs a vision-like transformation upon an input image sequence to produce a vision energy map. The virtual reference generator (304) operates upon the vision energy map to produce a virtual reference while the virtual distortion generator (306) produces distortion estimates that are use by the virtual reference generator to produce the virtual reference. The virtual distortion and virtual reference are used by the image quality metric generator (308) to produce an image quality metric for the input video sequence without the use of a reference video sequence.

Method and apparatus for estimating digital video quality without using a reference video

A display processor using first and second chrominance map memories for storing values of first and second color-difference signals, each normalized respective to luminance signal. An image memory supplies, at pixel scan rate, data used to provide read-addresses to said first and second chrominance map memories and data used to describe the luminance signal. The first and second chrominance map memory read-outs are each multiplied by the luminance signal of appropriate spatial bandwidth to generate descriptions of the first and second color-difference signals i non-normalized form. These first and second color-difference signals and a full-spatial-bandwidth luminance signal are supplied to color matrixing circuitry. The color matrixing circuitry responds to these signals to provide red, green and blue drive signals to display apparatus. The display apparatus may comprise video amplifiers for the drive signals and a color kinescope, by way of example.
