Technological diversity in the tropical-subtropical zone of Southwest China during the terminal Pleistocene: excavations at Fodongdi Cave

L’Hoabinhien est un faciès sur galet emblématique des régions forestières et tropicales d’Asie du Sud-Est de la fin du Pléistocène supérieur jusqu’au milieu de l’Holocène. Dans une région marquée par l’existence de plusieurs humanités, il apparaît puis disparaît lorsque seuls les humains modernes sont encore présents. Ce phénomène technique se caractérise par la taille préférentiellement unifaciale d’outils lourds et épais sur galet comme des unifaces, des choppers, des chopping tools, des hémi-galets (splits) avec plus rarement des pièces bifaciales ou convergentes. Aucune armature, aucun projectile ou pointe de flèche ne sont représentés dans le lithic tool-kit de ces derniers chasseurs-cueilleurs-foragers paléolithiques des forêts tropicales. Ainsi, en Asie du Sud-Est, il ne semble pas y avoir d’évolution technique des industries lithiques ni aucune trace archéologique d’armatures de pierre pour la chasse entre 40 000 et 4000 BP, ce qui place les galets taillés hoabinhiens comme une réponse partielle à un questionnement plus vaste concernant l’adaptation humaine : le comportement technique, cynégétique, la subsistance en forêt tropicale. Comparé au Paléolithique supérieur contemporain en Occident, ces industries sur galet pourraient apparaître comme une inertie technico-temporelle, un « retard » sans changement majeur voire une régression cognitive. Sans invoquer quelque déterminisme écogéographique, nous sommes en présence d’un choix technique singulier et radical né de/dans/par la forêt qui résulte d’un dialogue entre la technique et l’environnement tropical. Le cas de l’Hoabinhien est un phénomène qui exprime un équilibre entre le minéral et un végétal en particulier, le bambou. L’invisible archéologique dans la matière lithique (armes pointues et armatures) s’est, en toute logique, exprimé dans de la matière végétale parfois siliceuse comme l’est par sa composition, le bambou. L’Hoabinhien porte en lui une complexité et une modernité sans précédent que seul l’Homo sapiens a su inventer. La pérennité de ce phénomène technique en contexte tropical humide associé à des matériaux périssables contraste avec le récit préhistorique habituel porté par le monde occidental. À partir d’exemples pris dans le matériel hoabinhien de fouilles récentes réalisées au Cambodge dans la grotte de Laang Spean par la Mission Préhistorique Franco-Cambodgienne du MEAE, nous illustrerons l’originalité et la diversité des chaînes opératoires lithiques sur galet des Gens de l’Hoabinhien. Nous proposerons également des hypothèses de fonctionnement de ce gros outillage à partir d’une analyse structurelle utilisant la modélisation 3D. The Hoabinhian represents an iconic pebble facies associated with the tropical forest regions of Southeast Asia, dating from the end of the Upper Pleistocene to the middle of the Holocene. In a region distinguished by the existence of multiple human populations, it emerges and then vanishes when only modern humans remain. This technical phenomenon is defined by the crafting of weighty, thick tools from pebbles, including unifaces, choppers, chopping tools, and splits, with bifacial pieces appearing less frequently. Notably absent from this last Paleolithic hunter-gatherer-forager toolkit are armatures, projectiles, or arrowheads. Therefore, in Southeast Asia, there seems to be a lack of technical evolution in lithic industries and no archaeological evidence of hunting projectiles from 40,000 to 4000 BP. This positions the Hoabinhian pebble tools as a part of the broader question concerning human adaptation, specifically technical behavior, forest subsistence, and life in the tropics. Compared to the contemporary Upper Palaeolithic in the West, these pebble industries might seem to exhibit technical-temporal inertia without significant change, or even a cognitive regression. However, without invoking any eco-geographical determinism, we find ourselves examining a unique and radical technical choice that originated in the forest, representing a dialogue between technology and the tropical environment. The Hoabinhian case is a phenomenon that signifies a balance between the mineral world and a specific plant, namely bamboo. The archaeological invisibility of lithic material (like pointed weapons and armatures) is logically offset by plant material, sometimes siliceous like bamboo. The Hoabinhian technique represents a novel complexity and modernity that only modern Homo sapiens has managed to invent. The persistence of this technical phenomenon in a humid tropical context, associated with perishable materials, contrasts sharply with the conventional prehistoric narrative of the Western world. By using examples taken from Hoabinhian material uncovered during recent excavations in the Laang Spean cave in Cambodia by the MEAE's “Mission Préhistorique Franco-Cambodgienne”, we aim to illustrate the originality and diversity of lithic reduction sequences on pebbles. We will also propose functional hypotheses for these pebbles using a structural approach based on 3D modeling. 

Le façonnage unifacial sur galet en Asie du Sud-Est : l’Hoabinhien du Cambodge

Recent discoveries in Yunnan province have confirmed the presence of the Hoabinhian technocomplex in this southern part of China. Compared with the history of Hoabinhian research in Southeast Asia, which goes back almost a century with numerous Hoabinhian sites dating back to the late Upper Pleistocene and Holocene, southwest China is still a blank page on the Hoabinhian question until recent years. For the vast territory of Yunnan (394,000 km2), we currently have only two published ancient Hoabinhian sites (Xiaodong rockshelter and Dedan cave) with reliable dating and typo-technological studies. To test the "Chinese Hoabinhian Homeland" hypothesis and the geo-strategic importance of Yunnan in migration routes to Southeast Asia, proposed in previous studies, modern archaeological methods should enable more sites in these southern Chinese regions to be discovered, excavated and studied. Firstly, fieldwork carried out in southwestern Yunnan in recent years (investigation, prospecting, excavation, etc.), where numerous lithic artefacts with Hoabinhian affinities have been collected, is discussed. The aim of this article is to present the typo-technological composition of these unpublished lithic assemblages from nine caves and open-air localities. Although we do not yet have precise stratigraphic information, their presence could nonetheless confirm the presence of the Hoabinhian lithic tradition in this region located in the upper reaches of the Mekong and Salween rivers within the most northerly humid tropical forest environment in Southeast Asia. Finally, we will discuss the diffusion strategy of Hoabinhian settlements in East Asia in a specific environmental and geographical context, as well as their possible dispersal along the river routes that irrigate and structure the relief of Southwest China and Peninsular Asia. Les découvertes récentes dans la province du Yunnan ont confirmé la présence du technocomplexe hoabinhien dans cette partie sud de la Chine. Comparé à l'histoire de la recherche sur l'Hoabinhien en Asie du Sud-Est qui remonte à près d'un siècle avec de nombreux sites hoabinhiens datant du Pléistocène supérieur final et de l'Holocène, le Sud-Ouest de la Chine n'est encore qu'une page blanche sur la question hoabinhienne jusqu'à ces dernières années. Pour le vaste territoire du Yunnan (394 000 km2), nous ne disposons actuellement que de deux sites hoabinhiens anciens publiés (l'abri sous roche de Xiaodong et la grotte de Dedan) avec des datations fiables et des études typo-technologiques de référence. Pour vérifier l'hypothèse de la "Chinese Hoabinhian Homeland" et l'importance géo-stratégique du Yunnan dans les voies migratoires vers l'Asie du Sud-Est, proposée dans les études précédentes, les méthodes archéologiques modernes devraient permettre de découvrir, de fouiller et d'étudier davantage de sites de ces régions méridionales chinoises. Dans un premier temps, il est question de récents travaux de terrain menés ces dernières années dans le Sud-Ouest du Yunnan (investigation, prospection, fouilles, etc.) où de nombreux objets lithiques présentant des affinités avec les Hoabinhiens ont été collectés. L'objectif de cet article, est de présenter la composition typo-technologique de ces assemblages lithiques inédits provenant de neuf grottes et de localités en plein air. Bien que nous ne disposions pas encore d'informations stratigraphiques précises, leur présence pourrait néanmoins confirmer l'existence de la tradition lithique hoabinhienne dans cette région située dans le cours supérieur du Mékong et de la Salween au sein d'un environnement forestier tropical humide le plus septentrional de l'Asie du Sud-Est. Enfin, nous discuterons de la stratégie de diffusion des peuplements hoabinhiens en Asie orientale à la fois dans un cadre environnemental et géographique comme de leur possible dispersion le long des voies fluviales irriguant et structurant le relief de la Chine du Sud-Ouest et de l'Asie péninsulaire. 

The Hoabinhian technocomplex in southwest China: Preliminary report on new discoveries in recent decades

The Hoabinhian phenomenon was long considered a late Paleolithic technocomplex in Southeast Asia. Recently, the discovery of several Hoabinhian sites in southwest China largely expanded its tempo-spatial distributions and enriched the toolkit of Hoabinhian hunter-gatherers. The Hoabinbian stone tools are often made with river cobbles of large to medium size and rarely reach over 150 mm and 1 kg. However, this perspective towards Hoabinhian cutting tools can be updated with recurring tools made on massive and even giant boulders discovered at Chinese Hoabinhian sites. Here we present the mega lithic tools (> 150 mm, 2 kg) from the first and also the currently known earliest Hoabinhian site – Xiaodong rockshelter in southwest China. These tools' productional and techno-functional characteristics were described and illustrated, and whether they have utilitarian purposes was discussed. Although these massive, giant, heavy-duty Hoabinhian tools are morpho-typologically similar to those large-medium ones found at the site, their original size may endow new aspects (cognitive, technical, symbolic, social, etc.) to these tools that are still poorly understood. Le phénomène Hoabinhian a longtemps été considéré comme un technocomplexe de la fin du Paléolithique en Asie du Sud-Est. Récemment, la découverte de plusieurs sites hoabinhiens dans le sud-ouest de la Chine a largement étendu sa distribution spatio-temporelle et enrichi l'outillage des chasseurs-cueilleurs hoabinhiens. Les outils en pierre des Hoabinhiens sont souvent fabriqués avec des galets de rivière de taille moyenne à grande et atteignent rarement plus de 150 mm et 1 kg. Cependant, cette approche des outils hoabinhiens peut être modifiée avec les outils réalisés sur des galets massifs, voire géants, découverts sur les sites hoabinhiens chinois. Nous présentons ici les outils lithiques de grande taille (> 150 mm, 2 kg) du premier site Hoabinhien, et aussi du plus ancien connu à ce jour, l'abri sous roche de Xiaodong, dans le sud-ouest de la Chine. Les caractéristiques de production et techno-fonctionnelles de ces outils ont été décrites, et la question de savoir s'ils avaient des objectifs utilitaires a été discutée. Bien que ces outils hoabinhiens massifs, géants et lourds, soient morpho-typologiquement similaires aux outils de taille moyenne et grande trouvés sur le site, leur taille originale peut leur conférer de nouveaux aspects (cognitifs, techniques, symboliques, sociaux, etc.) qui sont encore mal compris.

ABSTRACTThe cultural relationship between southern China and mainland Southeast Asia during the final Pleistocene-early Holocene is a major concern in prehistoric studies among scholars in both regions. During this period, the lithic assemblages are known to be predominantly cobble-based industries, grouped under the term “chopper-chopping tools tradition”. The analytical simplification of different assemblages may make typological sense, and this could explain why local technical expressions are not well documented; while the Hoabinhian technocomplex is a good example of cobble diversity and technological variability. To provide information on the various techno-cultural expressions on cobbles in southern China, this paper presents the results of four representative cobble assemblages from southern China studied from the chaîne opératoire perspective, and the inter-site comparison allowed us to identify their similarities and differences qualitatively and quantitatively.
