Techniques to support emergency voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls are described. The techniques may be used for various 3GPP and 3GPP2 networks, various location architectures, and various types of User Equipment (UE). A UE communicates with a visited network to send a request to establish an emergency VoIP call. The UE interacts with a location server instructed by the visited network to obtain a first position estimate for the UE. The UE performs call setup via the visited network to establish the emergency VoIP call with a PSAP, which may be selected based on the first position estimate. The UE may thereafter perform positioning with the location server to obtain an updated position estimate for the UE, e.g., if requested by the PSAP.

A “Proxi-Mapper” combines location based services (LBS), local searching capabilities, and relative mapping in a way that minimizes bandwidth requirements and maximizes user experience. The Proxi-Mapper automatically determines approximate locations of one or more local user devices (cell phones, PDA's, media players, portable computing devices, etc.) and returns a lightweight model of local entities (“key-points”) representing businesses, services or people to those devices. Key-points are maintained in one or more remote databases in which key-points are assigned to predetermined grid sections based on the locations of the corresponding entities. Metadata associated with the key-points provides the user with additional information relating to the corresponding entities. In various embodiments, user query options allow the Proxi-Mapper to pull or push relevant local key-point based information to user devices via one or more wired or wireless networks.

Location mapping for key-point based services

A method for establishing a media for communications in association with a location information service provided in association with a communication system is disclosed. In the method a user equipment is provided with information enabling the user equipment to communicate on a user plane connection with at least one location service entity when the user equipment is visiting a communication network other than a home network of the user equipment. This information may then be used for establishment of a user plane connection in the visited communication network between the user equipment and a location service entity.

Providing location information in a visited network

A user equipment (UE) communicating with a radio access network (RAN) sends to a network entity (e.g., an MSC/SGSN) a request for periodic reporting of the UE location to a client entity. After the request is approved, the MSC/SGSN sends to the RAN signaling to initiate periodic location reporting for the UE. The RAN may request a positioning center (e.g., a SAS) to send assistance data to the UE. The RAN may coordinate and control the periodic location reporting or may pass the control over to the positioning center. For each location reporting, the UE sends location information (e.g., measurements made by the UE or a location estimate computed by the UE) to the RAN. The SAS computes a location estimate if the UE sends measurements. The RAN then sends the location estimate for the UE to the MSC/SGSN, which forwards the location estimate toward the client entity.

Efficient periodic location reporting in a radio access network

Providing time-based network services to a mobile device involves determining a location of a network access point accessible by the mobile device. A service provider targets a service event for the mobile device. A time zone of the mobile device is determined based on the location of the network access point. An indicator of the time zone of the mobile device is communicated to the service provider arrangement. An event time for a service event based on the time zone is updated by the service provider based on the time zone indicator. Thereafter, the time zone of the mobile device may be tracked by monitoring the locations of network access points being used by the mobile device, and determining an updated time zone based on these locations. The updated time zone information can be used to update the service event.

Determining user equipment time zones for time-based service fulfillment

In one of multiple mobile communication networks, a serving node responsible for locating mobile terminals is responsive to a registration request from a mobile terminal for storing the serving node identity in a home location database to which the mobile terminal is subscribed. In response to a location request message from a client terminal requesting the location of a target mobile terminal, a serving node identity is retrieved from the home location database of the target mobile terminal. The serving node identity represents the current location of the target mobile terminal. If the current location area is within the coverage area of location-based service provided by the client terminal, the location request message is forwarded to a serving node identified by the retrieved serving node identity. Otherwise, an error message is transmitted to the client terminal to indicate that the target mobile terminal is roaming outside of the coverage area.

Location system and method for client terminals which provide location-based service to mobile terminals

PURPOSE: A positioning system and method of a client terminal for providing a position-based service to a mobile terminal is provided to prevent waste of resources of a mobile communication network for positioning requesting/noticing traffic when a target mobile terminal is roaming in an area where a position-based service is not provided. CONSTITUTION: A requesting GMLC(Gateway Mobile Location Center)(2a) determines whether the positioning area of a target UE(6B), which is roaming in a network 'C', is in a service-coverage area of a client or not. If the positioning area of the target UE(6B) is in the service-coverage area, the requesting GMLC(2A) sends a positioning request message of the client terminal to a home GMLC(2B) so that the message can be checked for secrecy. When the message is checked, the home gateway(2B) sends the message to a visiting GMLC(2C) and then requests positioning information of the target UE(6B) from a serving node(3C). If the positioning area of the target UE(6B) is out of the service-coverage area, the requesting GMLC(2A) formalizes an error message and transmits the error message to a client terminal(1A).
