We present a new global model of plate motions and strain rates in plate boundary zones constrained by horizontal geodetic velocities. This Global Strain Rate Model (GSRM v.2.1) is a vast improvement over its predecessor both in terms of amount of data input as in an increase in spatial model resolution by factor of ∼2.5 in areas with dense data coverage. We determined 6739 velocities from time series of (mostly) continuous GPS measurements; i.e., by far the largest global velocity solution to date. We transformed 15,772 velocities from 233 (mostly) published studies onto our core solution to obtain 22,511 velocities in the same reference frame. Care is taken to not use velocities from stations (or time periods) that are affected by transient phenomena; i.e., this data set consists of velocities best representing the interseismic plate velocity. About 14% of the Earth is allowed to deform in 145,086 deforming grid cells (0.25° longitude by 0.2° latitude in dimension). The remainder of the Earth's surface is modeled as rigid spherical caps representing 50 tectonic plates. For 36 plates we present new GPS-derived angular velocities. For all the plates that can be compared with the most recent geologic plate motion model, we find that the difference in angular velocity is significant. The rigid-body rotations are used as boundary conditions in the strain rate calculations. The strain rate field is modeled using the Haines and Holt method, which uses splines to obtain an self-consistent interpolated velocity gradient tensor field, from which strain rates, vorticity rates, and expected velocities are derived. We also present expected faulting orientations in areas with significant vorticity, and update the no-net rotation reference frame associated with our global velocity gradient field. Finally, we present a global map of recurrence times for Mw=7.5 characteristic earthquakes.

Present-day kinematics of the Mediterranean: A comprehensive overview of GPS results

[1] The Aegean region (Greece, western Turkey) is one of the best studied continental extensional provinces. Here, we provide the first detailed kinematic restoration of the Aegean region since 35 Ma. The region consists of stacked upper crustal slices (nappes) that reflect a complex paleogeography. These were decoupled from the subducting African-Adriatic lithospheric slab. Especially since ∼25 Ma, extensional detachments cut the nappe stack and exhumed its metamorphosed portions in metamorphic core complexes. We reconstruct up to 400 km of trench-perpendicular (NE-SW) extension in two stages. From 25 to 15 Ma, the Aegean forearc rotated clockwise relative to the Moesian platform around Euler poles in northern Greece, accommodated by extensional detachments in the north and an inferred transfer fault SE of the Menderes massif. The majority of extension occurred after 15 Ma (up to 290 km) by opposite rotations of the western and eastern parts of the region. Simultaneously, the Aegean region underwent up to 650 km of post-25 Ma trench-parallel extension leading to dramatic crustal thinning on Crete. We restore a detachment configuration with the Mid-Cycladic Lineament representing a detachment that accommodated trench-parallel extension in the central Aegean region. Finally, we demonstrate that the Sakarya zone and Cretaceous ophiolites of Turkey cannot be traced far into the Aegean region and are likely bounded by a pre-35 Ma N-S fault zone. This fault became reactivated since 25 Ma as an extensional detachment located west of Lesbos Island. The paleogeographic units south of the Izmir-Ankara-Sava suture, however, can be correlated from Greece to Turkey.

Map view restoration of Aegean–West Anatolian accretion and extension since the Eocene

We present a full 3-D velocity field of the Earth's surface in the Euro-Mediterranean area obtained from a combination of three different velocity solutions computed at the Centro Nazionale Terremoti (CNT) of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). All the publicly available GPS data since 1993, have been fully reprocessed by three different software tools and the final velocity field is estimated combining three independent velocity solutions in a least squares sense. The input velocity solutions are treated as stochastic samples of the true velocity field by loosening the reference frame constraints in the associated variance-covariance matrix. The proposed approach allows for a fast and efficient combination of multi velocity solutions, taking into account the full network covariance, if available. The velocity map for the Euro-Mediterranean region will be updated and released regularly on the web portal of the National GPS Network (http://ring.gm.ingv.it) and made available to the scientific community. Here we show and discuss the data analysis and the combination schemes, and the results of the combined velocity field.

A Combined Velocity Field of the Mediterranean Region

Overdeepened valleys and basins are commonly found below the present landscape surface in areas that were affected by Quaternary glaciations. Overdeepened troughs and their sedimentary fillings are important in applied geology, for example, for geotechnics of deep foundations and tunnelling, groundwater resource management, and radioactive waste disposal. This publication is an overview of the areal distribution and the geometry of overdeepened troughs in the Alps and their foreland, and summarises the present knowledge of the age and potential processes that may have caused deep erosion. It is shown that overdeepened features within the Alps concur mainly with tectonic structures and/or weak lithologies as well as with Pleistocene ice confluence and partly also diffluence situations. In the foreland, overdeepening is found as elongated buried valleys, mainly oriented in the direction of former ice flow, and glacially scoured basins in the ablation area of glaciers. Some buried deeply incised valleys were generated by fluvial down-cutting during the Messinian crisis but this mechanism of formation applies only for the southern side of the Alps. Lithostratigraphic records and dating evidence reveal that overdeepened valleys were repeatedly occupied and excavated by glaciers during past glaciations. However, the age of the original formation of (non-Messinian) overdeepened structures remains unknown. The mechanisms causing overdeepening also remain unidentified and it can only be speculated that pressurised meltwater played an important role in this context.

Nowadays, the need for a more precise positioning is a very high, therefore very demanding one, and this is one of the reasons why very large research funding is allocated in satellite technology, the second reason being global geopolitics situation. New satellite constellations are being developed existing satellites that have completed their mission are being replaced with satellites that incorporate technology far superior to their predecessors. Currently we have four constellations with global coverage, NAVSTAR-GPS and Glonass, Galileo and Compass. With the development of these global satellite systems, it is also necessary to develop the user segment, so this requires terrestrial reference stations to be updated to recognize the new signals from them. The article presents the situation of the global satellite systems and the situation of the permanent reference networks in Romania, which are developed by state or private companies.

Status of the activities performed within the CERGOP-2 project in Romania

We analyze and model the regional distortions of the European Gravimetric Geoid 1997 (EGG97) in Romania using GPS-levelling data. A comparison of the EGG97 gravimetric quasi-geoid with the GPS-levelling data indicates the presence of significant regional distortions in particular areas along the border of the country. To model the regional distortions, we apply two methods: (i) the recently proposed innovation function approach by Prutkin and Klees (J. Geod. 82(3), 147–156, 2007), which is based on a mathematical formulation of the differences between gravimetric quasi-geoid and GPS-levelling data in terms of a Cauchy boundary-value problem for the Laplace equation. (ii) the conventional approach of a low-degree polynomial correction surface. The results reveal that the innovation function approach gives more options to model a more complex trend of the regional gravimetric quasi-geoid distortions than the correction surface approach.
