Design and conduct of indoor radon surveys

Qualitative overview of indoor radon surveys in Europe.

Residential radon exposure is a major public health problem. It is the second greatest cause of lung cancer, after smoking, and the greatest in never-smokers. This study shows the indoor radon exposure distribution in Galicia and estimates the percentage of dwellings exceeding reference levels. It is based on 3245 residential radon measurements obtained from the Galician Radon Map project and from controls of two previous case-control studies on residential radon and lung cancer. Results show a high median residential radon concentration in Galicia (99 Bq m-3), with 49.3% of dwellings having a radon concentration above 100 Bq m-3 and 11.1% having a concentration above 300 Bq m-3. Ourense and Pontevedra, located in South Galicia, are the provinces with the highest median indoor radon concentrations (137 Bq m-3 and 123.5 Bq m-3, respectively). Results also show lower radon levels in progressively higher building storeys. These high residential radon concentrations confirm Galicia as a radon-prone area. A policy on radon should be developed and implemented in Galicia to minimize the residential radon exposure of the population.

Radon mitigation in domestic properties and its health implications—a comparison between during-construction and post-construction radon reduction

This report presents the results of a survey of radon in domestic dwellings in Ireland carried all by
the Radiological Prolection Institute of Ireland (RPII) between 1992 and 1999. The survey was
carried out to identify areas of the country most at risk of high indoor radon levels.
The survey was geographically based using the 10 km grid squares of the Irish National Grid as the area. Indoor radon measurements were carried out for 12 m sing passive alpha track
detectors in houses selecled at random in each grid square throughout the country. The results were
used to predict the percentage of houses in each grid square with radon levels in excess of 200 8q/mJ
(the Reference Level for house) Grid squares across the country in which this prediction exceeds
10% are designated High Radon Areas. Radon prediction maps, detailing the distribl/tion of High
Radon Areas. were produced for each county.
Radon measurements were carried out in 11.319 houses throughout the country. Radon levels varied
from 10 to 1.924 Bq/m with an average indoor radon concentration of 89 8q Using the
GeoDirectory database, which provides tile nl/mber of residential units in each grid square. it has
been estimated that 91.019 houses throughout the country or 7% of the total. have indoor levels in
excess of 200 Bq/m and that the population-weighted average indoor radon concentration is
91 Bq/m
