In this paper, a fiber-optic millimeter-wave (mm-wave) downlink system using 60 GHz-band external modulation is investigated. We prepare the fiber-optic 60 GHz-band mm-wave downlink testbed. It consists of an optical modulation section with a mm-wave signal generator, an optical single sideband (SSB) filter, a standard single-mode fiber (SMF), an optical detection section with a 60 GHz-band radio transmitter and a 60 GHz-band radio receiver. To modulate the laser output with 60 GHz-band mm-wave signals directly, a specially designed electro-absorption modulator with high-efficiency at around 60 GHz is used. The use of this modulator makes the simpler system configuration possible. Using the downlink testbed, the 5 m-long free-space propagation of subcarrier multiplexed 156 Mb/s-DPSK 60 GHz-band mm-wave signals recovered by optical direct detection is successfully demonstrated. The transmission of the mm-wave signals over 85 km-long standard SMF is also successfully demonstrated, using an optical SSB filtering technique to overcome the fiber dispersion. The BER of 10/sup -9/ is achievable at the optical received power of -7.0 dBm.

The development of 60 GHz-band ultra-miniature FM/frequency-shift keying (FM/FSK) transmitter/receiver modules fabricated with a complete monolithic-microwave integrated circuits (MMIC) chip set, including dielectrically stabilized fundamental-frequency oscillators for multimedia wireless communication systems, is reported. The 0.9 cc transmitter module, which consists of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) and two power amplifiers, exhibits 11.5 MHz/V modulation sensitivity, 10.2 dBm output power, and -2.4 ppm//spl deg/C frequency stability. With the receiver module, which consists of low noise amplifier (LNA), a mixer, and a local oscillator (LO), 5.4 dB double-side band (DSB) noise figure with 10.8 dB downconversion gain has been achieved. The 60 GHz band monolithic dielectric-resonator (DR) stabilized oscillators offer a practical approach to ultra miniature transmitter/receiver modules for high-speed wireless LAN systems with data rates greater than 10 Mbps and for video-signal and compressed HDTV-signal (MUSE) transmission systems.

Low-cost 60GHz-band Antenna-integrated Transmitter/Receiver Modules Utilizing Multi-layer Low-temperature Co-fired Ceramic Technology

These millimeter-wave multi-chip modules (MCMs) carry MMICs flip-chip mounted on a low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) substrate with an integrated antenna. The LTCC technology combining thick film printing technique is widely used for low-cost, high-volume applications, but is limited to a low-frequency operation <30 GHz. This is due mainly to relatively high dielectric loss and low pattern resolution. To overcome these difficulties and to realize low-cost MCMs, the MCM includes several new concepts.

Low-cost 60 GHz-band antenna-integrated transmitter/receiver modules utilizing multi-layer low-temperature co-fired ceramic technology

The use of a smart antenna is a major step forward in a cellular system. In existing deployments, smart antennas must be integrated with conventional cell site equipment to function as an adaptive spatial filter that yields increased signal quality, capacity, and/or range over conventional antennas. This implementation will require a combination of active microwave and digital electronics as an integral part of its system. This paper therefore explores areas of strategic importance in integration of new antenna array topologies which are appropriated for use as a building block for the indoor wireless system.

The authors describe the design and measured performances of the developed 60 GHz band MMICs, fabricated brass-board models of millimeter-wave application systems such as high and ultra-high speed wireless LAN, wide-band analog signal transmission and low bit-rate contactless ID systems, and the demonstrated performance of the wireless LAN system in a Minimum Delay Spread (MDS) configuration set in our new conceptual propagation test room.
