Initial breakdown pulses in intracloud lightning flashes and their relation to terrestrial gamma ray flashes
Thomas C. Marshall,Maribeth Stolzenburg,Sumedhe Karunarathne,Steve Cummer,Gaopeng Lu,Hans-Dieter Betz,Michael S. Briggs,Valerie Connaughton,Shaolin Xiong +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the locations of fast initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) were determined with E-change data using a time-of-arrival (TOA) technique, which indicated that IBPs are directly related to the initial negative leader.
Ground-based observations of the relations between lightning charge-moment-change and the physical and optical properties of column sprites
Roy Yaniv,Yoav Yair,Colin Price,József Bór,Mitsutero Sato,Yasuhide Hobara,Steve Cummer,Jingbo Li,Adam Devir +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors looked for correlations between the properties of parent lightning (specifically, the charge moment change; CMC) to the characteristics of column sprites, such as the measured radiance, the length and the number of column elements in each sprite event.
Coincident Observation of Lightning using Spaceborne Spectrophotometer and Ground-Level Electromagnetic Sensors
Toru Adachi,Morris B. Cohen,Jingbo Li,Steve Cummer,Richard J. Blakeslee,Thomas C. Marshall,Maribeth Stolzenberg,Sumedhe Karunarathne,Rue-Ron Hsu,Han Tzong Su,A. Chen,Yukihiro Takahashi,Harald U. Frey,Stephen B. Mende +13 more
- 03 Dec 2012
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used spectrophotometric data obtained by the first spaceborne multicolor lightning detector, called ISUAL, to classify the observed events into cloud ]to ]ground (CG) and intra ]cloud (IC) lightning.

First simultaneous observations of optical lightning and terrestrial gamma flash from space
Nikolai Østgaard,Thomas Gjesteland,Brant Carlson,Andrew B. Collier,Steve Cummer,Gaopeng Lu,Hugh J. Christian +6 more
- 01 Aug 2014
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented the first simultaneous detection of a terrestrial gamma-ray flash and the optical signal from lightning by fortuitous coincidence two independent satellites passed less than 300 km from the thunderstorm system that produced a TGF that lasted 70 μs.
