A limited number of studies have examined the effects of energy drink consumption on student pilot fatigue and performance in aviation. The results from these studies were inconclusive and inconsistent. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of consuming Red Bull energy drinks on student pilot fatigue and performance levels. Healthy student pilots participated in this applied Quasi-experiment, who were given either Red Bull energy drinks or bottled water. Fatigue and sleep questionnaires were administered to assess fatigue and alertness levels of the participants. The results indicated there were no significant effects of consuming Red Bull energy drinks on student pilot alertness levels, which was subjectively measured by the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale. At the same time, consuming Red Bull energy drinks had no significant effect on student pilot cognitive performance levels, which was objectively measured by psychomotor vigilance task. However, the performance of participants in the Red Bull energy drink group was improved compared to the performance of participants in the water group, which was measured by faster reaction times, fewer numbers of lapses and errors. Additional, higher number of correct responses and zero number of sleep attacks were also measured. More importantly, the likelihood of error detection by student pilots who consumed Red Bull energy drinks was significant, F (1,108) = 9.12, p = .003.

The need for 24-hour operations creates nonstandard and altered work schedules that can lead to cumulative sleep loss and circadian disruption. These factors can lead to fatigue and sleepiness and affect performance and productivity on the job. The approach, research, and results of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Ames Fatigue Countermeasures Program are described to illustrate one attempt to address these issues in the aviation environment. The scientific and operational relevance of these factors is discussed, and provocative issues for future research are presented.

Fatigue in operational settings: examples from the aviation field

Fatigue management in military aviation remains problematic and can be easily neglected by planners and aircrew in a busy operational environment. The basic assessment tool (BAT) is an objective and educational computer tool for evaluating and combining various fatigue factors. It provides an impartial performance comparison while at the same time educating and reminding its users of the importance of fatigue management. Individual factors of the BAT were chosen because they affect fatigue, sleepiness, alertness and performance. A short explanation of components not chosen is also included. An example of how the BAT can be used is described and figures of the resulting outputs (screenshots) are included. Most commercial fatigue estimation products are subjective and, do not consider specific issues associated with tactical operations in a field environment. This novel approach can be used to help plan missions by minimizing the BAT score while still maximising the tactical advantage and keeping fatigue management fresh in the minds of military rotary wing pilots while in training and on operations. Although the BAT is military aviation focused and objective, it can be easily modified to suit particular fatigue concerns.

: Recently published data on military aviation mishaps suggest aircrew fatigue remains a flight safety problem The current study, in which the responses from 241 Army aviators and 120 Army enlisted crew members were analyzed, indicates that inadequate sleep and/or insufficient sleep quality is adversely affecting on-the-job alertness The requirements to work a variety of schedules and to travel/work away from home are likely contributing to less than optimal sleep quality; however, a number of personnel may be suffering from sleep deprivation due to intentional sleep restriction as well The personnel surveyed in this study indicated they were sleeping less than 7 hours per night which is 1 hour less than the amount recommended by sleep specialists This insufficient sleep, combined with rotating schedules and other work demands, no doubt contributed to the perceptions of three-quarters of the present sample that fatigue is a widespread problem in the military aviation community These results indicate the importance of continuing to stress fatigue-reduction strategies in training and operational environments
