Digital platforms for business-to-business markets: A systematic review and future research agenda


Purpose
This paper examines the impact of a blockchain platform on the role and importance of trust in established buyer-supplier relationships.


Design/methodology/approach
A literature review provides insight into trust development in supply chains. Research uses a case study of two wine supply chains: the producers, importers, logistics companies and UK Government agencies. Semi-structured interviews determine how trust and trustworthiness develop in buyer-supplier relationships and the impact of a blockchain-based technology proof of concept on supply chain trust.


Findings
A blockchain-based platform introduces common trusted data, reducing data duplication and improving supply chain visibility. The platform supports trust building between parties but does not replace the requirements for organisations to establish a position of trust. Contrary to literature claims for blockchain trustless disintermediation, new intermediaries are introduced who need to be trusted.


Research limitations/implications
The case study presents challenges specific to UK customs borders, and research needs to be repeated in different contexts to establish if findings are generalisable.


Practical implications
A blockchain-based platform can improve supply chain efficiency and trust development but does not remove the need for trust and trust-building processes. Blockchain platform providers need to build a position of trust with all participants.


Originality/value
Case study research shows how blockchain facilitates but does not remove trust, trustworthiness and trust relationships in established supply chains. The reduction in information asymmetry and improved supply chain visibility provided by blockchain does not change the importance of trust in established buyer-supplier relationships or the trust-based policy of the UK Government at the customs border.

Trusting the trust machine: Evaluating trust signals of blockchain applications

Although multi-sided platforms (MSPs) and their diffusion in B2C contexts received heightened attention in recent literature, there is still a dearth of research on MSP diffusion inhibitors in competitive B2B networks. Using the air cargo hub in Frankfurt, Germany, as highly competitive B2B network which struggles with the acceptance of an MSP for over 10 years, we applied a grounded theory approach to identify key inhibitors to MSP diffusion. Based on several interviews with a diverse set of stakeholders and a systematic coding procedure, we identified 21 factors inhibiting MSP diffusion. The majority of these factors slows down or even thwarts positive network effects, typically occurring on MSPs. Furthermore, we derive a classification showing that the inhibiting factors primarily hamper cross-side network effects in highly competitive B2B networks, and to a lesser degree also same-side and mixed-side network effects. Finally, implications of these results and future research directions are discussed.

Multi-sided platform diffusion in competitive B2B networks: inhibiting factors and their impact on network effects

Initial coin offerings (ICOs) have recently emerged as a new financing instrument for entrepreneurial ventures, spurring economic and academic interest. Nevertheless, the impact of exogenous and endogenous signals on the performance of ICOs as well as the effects of the cryptocurrency hype and subsequent downfall of Bitcoin between 2016 and 2019 remain underexplored. We applied ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions based on a dataset containing 1597 ICOs that covers almost 2.5 years. The results show that exogenous and endogenous signals have a significant effect on the funds raised in ICOs. We also find that the Bitcoin price heavily drives the performance of ICOs. However, this hype effect is moderated, as high-quality ICOs are not pegged to these price developments. Revealing the interplay between hypes and signals in the ICO’s asset class should broaden the discussion of this emerging digital phenomenon.

Trust-Building Effects of Blockchain Features - An Empirical Analysis of Immutability, Traceability and Anonymity.

The rapid innovation and spread of smart phones as well as their mobile applications offer people many benefits in their everyday life. The dark side, however, is that users are constantly facing more and more information, which may result in information overload. In this paper, we argue that information overload can affect users’ continuance intention of mobile applications use. The context of smart phones and mobile applications needs a special consideration because of the smaller displaysize and the touch-based user interface. In addition, we contend that these effects differ according to users’ attribution of the blame (themselves or mobile application) for the information overload. To explore this effect, we build on and contextualize Bhattacherjee’s information system continuance model and extend it with the construct information overload. We test the model by using a scenariobased study with 120 participants that enables us to manipulate information overload as well as the locus of the attribution of blame in an isolated way. The results show that satisfaction and perceived usefulness fully mediate the negative effect from information overload on continuance intention of mobile applications. Furthermore, internal attributions of blame are associated with a higher continuance intention than external attributions.
