Absorbent articles comprising molded airlaid webs and other molded fibrous webs are disclosed. The molded webs can offer improved body fit, comfort, and/or improved fluid handling. Molded airlaid webs, for example, can be formed having a central longitudinal hump and flexure zones longitudinally removed from the central hump to provide good contact with the body and improved fit when the article is squeezed from the sides. Molding can be achieved when a binder material is activated by an energy source and the web is held against a molding substrate. Energy sources can include microwaves, heated air, heated metal surfaces, ultraviolet radiation, ultrasonic energy, and the like.

Tomographic imaging of biological tissue is achieved through a microwave imaging system and associated methods. An array of antennas are positioned in an illumination tank to surround biological tissue to be imaged. A liquid coupling medium is placed in the illumination tank, and the biological tissue is immersed in the medium. The array of antennas transmit and receive microwave-frequency RF signals that are propagated through the biological tissue. A signal processor is coupled to the antennas to process a demodulated signal representative of the microwave-frequency RF signal received by one or more of the antennas to produce scattered field magnitude and phase signal projections of the biological tissue. These projections may be used to reconstruct a conductivity and permittivity image across an imaged section of the biological tissue to identify the locations of different tissue types (e.g., normal versus malignant or cancerous) within the biological tissue. The liquid coupling medium may include glycerol in a solution with water or saline, or in an emulsion with water, and oil and an emulsifier. The liquid coupling medium containing glycerol provides a low-contrast medium that is beneficial when imaging low-permittivity objects, such as human breast tissue.

A fiber-reinforced composite structure has two molded outer polymeric layers spaced apart from each other and defining a cavity therebetween. Each molded outer polymeric layer defines a sealing surface extending about a periphery of the respective layer, and the opposing sealing surfaces cooperate to define a hermetic seal extending about a periphery of the cavity. One or more multi-directional fiber reinforcement layers are adhesively attached in a discontinuous manner to each outer polymeric layer, and define a first region of the cavity extending between each respective outer polymeric layer and adjacent fiber reinforcement layer, and a second region of the cavity extending between the fiber reinforcement layers. A core is located between the two outer polymeric layers, and is made of a resinous core material capable of exhibiting a foamed character and a resinous character. The resinous core material has a blowing agent activatable upon exposure to a predetermined vacuum pressure within the cavity to convert the core material within the second region of the cavity from a resinous character to a foamed character and thereby fill the second region of the cavity with the foamed core material. Each multi-directional fiber reinforcement layer is impregnated with the core material exhibiting a relatively dense, resinous character, and each first region of the cavity is substantially filled with the core material exhibiting a resinous character to fixedly secure the multi-directional fiber reinforcement layers to the outer polymeric layers. A structural insert, such as a rigid plate adapted to receive fasteners, is embedded within the core material for attaching other devices or structures thereto.

A rigid three-dimensional preform is made by moving a plurality of webs of fibrous reinforcement material superposed and coplanar to a cutter, the webs being coated with an electromagnetic energy-curable binder and pressed together. Prior to cutting a blank in a two-dimensional development of the three-dimensional preform from the webs, the webs are tacked together at spaced local zones by locally curing the binder at those zones by locally applying the appropriate electromagnetic radiation (microwave, ultraviolet, electron) so that the webs travel as one to the cutter. After cutting of the blank, the blank is loaded into a mold to replicate the three-dimensional shape of the preform and the remainder of the binder is cured in the mold by the application of the appropriate electromagnetic radiation. An auxiliary member may be attached to the preform by applying an electromagnetic energy-curable binder to at least one location on the preform, moving the auxiliary member into a desired position and intimate contact with the binder-coated location and the binder cured at that location by the application of the appropriate electromagnetic radiation.

Selected electromagnetic energy (microwave or ultraviolet) is then applied to cure and rigidize the binder. A mold for shaping the reinforcement material comprises a mold cavity defined by microwave or ultraviolet transparent material divided into separate and separable mold parts and, for microwave applications, each part carries one half of a split microwave waveguide which directs microwave energy to cure the binder resin when the mold is closed. For ultraviolet applications, an ultraviolet source (or sources) is located in the mold. Energetic stitching of a reinforcement rib is performed by applying a binder resin to the rib at at least one location, placing that location into contact with a preform and curing the binder resin to bond the parts together.
