A New Family of Heparin-binding Growth/Differentiation Factors: Increased Midkine Expression in Wilms' Tumor and Other Human Carcinomas
Jun-ichiro Tsutsui,Kenji Kadomatsu,Shyuichiro Matsubara,Akira Nakagawara,Masahiro Hamanoue,Sonshin Takao,Hisaaki Shimazu,Yoshitada Ohi,Takashi Muramatsu +8 more
TL;DR: The results suggest an important role of MK in the development and/or biological behavior of tumors and raised a possibility to use MK as a diagnostic marker.

A new family of heparin-binding factors: Strong conservation of midkine (MK) sequences between the human and the mouse
TL;DR: Comparison of MK and HB-GAM/pleiotrophin (another member of the family) from various species revealed sequences conserved in the family and those specific for each protein.

CD133 facilitates epithelial-mesenchymal transition through interaction with the ERK pathway in pancreatic cancer metastasis.
Qiang Ding,Yumi Miyazaki,Koichiro Tsukasa,Shyuichiro Matsubara,Makoto Yoshimitsu,Sonshin Takao +5 more
TL;DR: It is found that CD133+ human pancreatic cancer cells were prone to generating metastatic nodules in in vivo models using immunodeficient mice and CD133 knockdown suppressed cancer invasion and metastasis in vivo.

Midkine promoter-based adenoviral vector gene delivery for pediatric solid tumors.
Yasuo Adachi,Paul N. Reynolds,Masato Yamamoto,William E. Grizzle,Ken Overturf,Shyuichiro Matsubara,Takashi Muramatsu,David T. Curiel +7 more
TL;DR: New recombinant adenoviral vectors containing either luciferase reporter gene or herpes simplex thymidine kinase gene under the control of the human MK promoter are developed and it is concluded that the MK promoter is a candidate tumor-specific promoter for Wilms' tumor or neuroblastoma.

Genomic Structure of Human Midkine (MK), a Retinoic Acid-Responsive Growth/Differentiation Factor
TL;DR: The structure of the cloned human MK gene was determined and compared with that of the mouse gene, and it was found that 170 bases in the upstream region of the putative transcription initiation sites and 3 blocks of 200-350 bases in regions further upstream were highly conserved.
