In recent years, the rapid development of modern society is calling for advanced energy storage to meet the growing demands of energy supply and generation. As one of the most promising energy storage systems, secondary batteries are attracting much attention. The electrolyte is an important part of the secondary battery, and its composition is closely related to the electrochemical performance of the secondary batteries. Lithium-ion battery electrolyte is mainly composed of solvents, additives, and lithium salts, which are prepared according to specific proportions under certain conditions and according to the needs of characteristics. This review analyzes the advantages and current problems of the liquid electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) from the mechanism of action and failure mechanism, summarizes the research progress of solvents, lithium salts, and additives, analyzes the future trends and requirements of lithium-ion battery electrolytes, and points out the emerging opportunities in advanced lithium-ion battery electrolytes development.

Research Progresses of Liquid Electrolytes in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

LiCoO2 has suffered from poor stability under high voltage as a result of insufficient Co–O bonding that causes lattice oxygen release and lattice distortions. Herein, we fabricated a high-voltage LiCoO2 at 4.6 V by doping with Ni/Mn atoms, which are obtained from spent LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 cathode materials. The as-prepared high-voltage LiCoO2 with Ni/Mn substitutional dopants in the Co layer enhances Co–O bonding that suppresses oxygen release and harmful phase transformation during delithiation, thus stabilizing the layered structure and leading to a superior electrochemical performance at 4.6 V. The pouch cell of modified LiCoO2 exhibits a capacity retention of 85.1% over 100 cycles at 4.5 V (vs graphite). We found that our strategy is applicable for degraded LiCoO2, and the regenerated LiCoO2 using this strategy exhibits excellent capacity retention (84.1%, 100 cycles) at 4.6 V. Our strategy paves the way for the direct conversion of spent batteries into high-energy-density batteries. 

Suppressed Lattice Oxygen Release via Ni/Mn Doping from Spent LiNi0.5Mn0.3Co0.2O2 toward High-Energy Layered-Oxide Cathodes

Structures, issues, and optimization strategies of Ni-rich and Co-low cathode materials for lithium-ion battery

Ether electrolytes are considered to be one of the most promising candidates for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) since they help to form a stable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on lithium anodes. However, conventional liquid ether electrolytes are not suitable for the high‐voltage LMBs over 4.5 V due to their narrow potential windows. Herein, a gel electrolyte strategy is demonstrated to improve the high voltage stability of ether electrolytes in LMBs with Li‐rich layered oxide (LLO) cathodes that usually operate at 4.6 V and above. Compared with a liquid electrolyte, the electrochemical window of the gel electrolyte with cross‐linked amide framework is increased by 1 V. The strong cross‐linked framework not only regulates the uniform growth of cathode electrolyte interface (CEI)/SEI on the cathode/anode sides, but also greatly increases the Li+ transference number and inhibits the generation of harmful substances by anchoring PF6− anions, thus providing a long cycle for LMBs at a high voltage up to 4.7 V. Simultaneously, the flame retardancy and flexibility of the gel electrolyte ensures the safe operation of high‐voltage LMBs. Therefore, the LLO||Li pouch cell using gel electrolyte realizes stable cycling at a high voltage 4.6 V, and can pass the acupuncture test.

Highly Oxidation‐Resistant Ether Gel Electrolytes for 4.7 V High‐Safety Lithium Metal Batteries

Tailoring inorganic components of cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is critical to improving the cycling performance of lithium metal batteries. However, it is challenging due to complicated electrolyte reactions on cathode/anode surfaces. Herein, the species and inorganic component content of the CEI/SEI is enriched with an objectively gradient distribution through employing pentafluorophenyl 4‐nitrobenzenesulfonate (PFBNBS) as electrolyte additive guided by engineering bond order with functional groups. In addition, a catalytic effect of LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NCM622) cathode is proposed on the decomposition of PFBNBS. PFBNBS with lower highest occupied molecular orbital can be preferentially oxidized on the NCM622 surface with the help of the catalytic effect to induce an inorganic‐rich CEI for superior electrochemical performance at high voltage. Moreover, PFBNBS can be reduced on the Li surface due to its lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital , increasing inorganic moieties in SEI for inhibiting Li dendrite generation. Thus, 4.5 V Li||NCM622 batteries with such electrolyte can retain 70.4% of initial capacity after 500 cycles at 0.2 C, which is attributed to the protective effect of the excellent CEI on NCM622 and the inhibitory effect of its derived CEI/SEI on continuous electrolyte decomposition.

Catalytically Induced Robust Inorganic‐Rich Cathode Electrolyte Interphase for 4.5 V Li||NCM622 Batteries

High-capacity Ni-rich layered oxides are considered as promising cathodes for lithium-ion batteries. However, the practical applications of LiNi0.83 Co0.07 Mn0.1 O2  (NCM83) cathode are challenged by continuous transition metal (TM) dissolution, microcracks and mixed arrangement of nickel and lithium sites, which are usually induced by deleterious cathode-electrolyte reactions. Herein, it is reported that those side reactions are limited by a reliable cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) layer formed by implanting a nonsacrificial nitrile additive. In this modified electrolyte, 1,3,6-Hexanetricarbonitrile (HTCN) plays a nonsacrificial role in modifying the composition, thickness, and formation mechanism of the CEI layers toward improved cycling stability. It is revealed that HTCN and 1,2-Bis(2-cyanoethoxy)ethane (DENE) are inclined to coordinate with the TM. HTCN can stably anchor on the NCM83 surface as a reliable CEI framework, in contrast, the prior decomposition of DENE additives will damage the CEI layer. As a result, the NCM83/graphite full cells with the LiPF6-EC/DEC-HTCN (BE-HTCN) electrolyte deliver a high capacity retention of 81.42% at 1 C after 300 cycles at a cutoff voltage of 4.5 V, whereas BE and BE-DENE electrolytes only deliver 64.01% and 60.05%. This nonsacrificial nitrile additive manipulation provides valuable guidance for developing aggressive high-capacity Ni-rich cathodes.
