In recent years, heterogeneous photocatalysis has received much research interest because of its powerful potential applications in tackling many important energy and environmental challenges at a global level in an economically sustainable manner. Due to their unique optical, electrical, and physicochemical properties, various 2D graphene nanosheets-supported semiconductor composite photocatalysts have been widely constructed and applied in different photocatalytic fields. In this review, fundamental mechanisms of heterogeneous photocatalysis, including thermodynamic and kinetics requirements, are first systematically summarized. Then, the photocatalysis-related properties of graphene and its derivatives, and design rules and synthesis methods of graphene-based composites are highlighted. Importantly, different design strategies, including doping and sensitization of semiconductors by graphene, improving electrical conductivity of graphene, increasing eloectrocatalytic active sites on graphene, strengthening interface coupling between semiconductors and graphene, fabricating micro/nano architectures, constructing multi-junction nanocomposites, enhancing photostability of semiconductors, and utilizing the synergistic effect of various modification strategies, are thoroughly summarized. The important applications including photocatalytic pollutant degradation, H2 production, and CO2 reduction are also addressed. Through reviewing the significant advances on this topic, it may provide new opportunities for designing highly efficient 2D graphene-based photocatalysts for various applications in photocatalysis and other fields, such as solar cells, thermal catalysis, separation, and purification.

Graphene in Photocatalysis: A Review

Application of transition metal phosphide (TMP) catalysts for full water splitting has great potential to help relieve the energy crisis. Various methods have been investigated to obtain high catalytic activity, but the use of electronic structure regulation by incorporation of different elements is of particular simplicity and significance for development of a universal TMP synthesis method. We herein describe a novel approach for fabricating a series of TMPs by pyrolyzing phytic acid (PA) cross-linked metal complexes. The introduction of oxygen atoms into TMPs not only enhanced their intrinsic electrical conductivity, facilitating electron transfer, but activated active sites via elongating the M–P bond, favoring the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) or oxygen evolution reaction (OER). MoP exhibited relative low HER overpotentials of 118 mV and 93 mV while supporting a current density of 20 mA·cm–2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1 M KOH electrolytes, respectively. Highly Active and Stable Catalysts of Phytic Acid-Derivative Transition Metal Phosphides for Full Water Splitting.

Solar driven photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC-WS) using semiconductor photoelectrodes represents a promising approach for a sustainable and environmentally friendly production of renewable energy vectors and fuel sources, such as dihydrogen (H2). In this context, titanium dioxide (TiO2) and iron oxide (hematite, α-Fe2O3) are among the most investigated candidates as photoanode materials, mainly owing to their resistance to photocorrosion, non-toxicity, natural abundance, and low production cost. Major drawbacks are, however, an inherently low electrical conductivity and a limited hole diffusion length that significantly affect the performance of TiO2 and α-Fe2O3 in PEC devices. To this regard, one-dimensional (1D) nanostructuring is typically applied as it provides several superior features such as a significant enlargement of the material surface area, extended contact between the semiconductor and the electrolyte and, most remarkably, preferential electrical transport that overall suppress charge carrier recombination and improve TiO2 and α-Fe2O3 photoelectrocatalytic properties. The present review describes various synthetic methods and modifying concepts of 1D-photoanodes (nanotubes, nanorods, nanofibers, nanowires) based on titania, hematite, and on α-Fe2O3/TiO2 heterostructures, for PEC applications. Various routes towards modification and enhancement of PEC activity of 1D photoanodes are discussed including doping, decoration with co-catalysts and heterojunction engineering. Finally, the challenges related to the optimization of charge transfer kinetics in both oxides are highlighted.

Photoanodes Based on TiO$_2$ and $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ for Solar Water Splitting Superior Role of 1D Nanoarchitectures and of Combined Heterostructures

Collecting and storing solar energy to hydrogen fuel through a photo-electrochemical (PEC) cell provides a clean and renewable pathway for future energy demands. Having earth-abundance, low biotoxicity, robustness, and an ideal n-type band position, hematite (α-Fe2 O3 ), the most common natural form of iron oxide, has occupied the research hotspot for decades. Here, a close look into recent progress of hematite photoanodes for PEC water splitting is provided. Effective approaches are introduced, such as cocatalysts loading and surface passivation layer deposition, to improve the hematite surface reaction in thermodynamics and kinetics. Second, typical methods for enhancing light absorption and accelerating charge transport in hematite bulk are reviewed, concentrating upon doping and nanostructuring. Third, the back contact between hematite and substrate, which affects interface states and electron transfer, is deliberated. In addition, perspectives on the key challenges and future prospects for the development of hematite photoelectrodes for PEC water splitting are given.

Surface, Bulk, and Interface: Rational Design of Hematite Architecture toward Efficient Photo-Electrochemical Water Splitting.

Nonmetal P-doped hematite photoanodes synthesized by a simple impregnation method during the hydrothermal preparation showed remarkable photocurrent densities of 2.3 mA cm−2 and 2.7 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE, for electrodes annealed at 650 °C and 750 °C, respectively. After “Co–Pi” cocatalyst modification, a photocurrent density of over 3 mA cm−2 at 1.23 VRHE could be achieved. The high activity can be attributed to enhanced electron mobility, as verified by DFT + U calculations, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and structural characterizations.
