The shift towards remote access and control of equipment has become more prominent, especially due to COVID-19 lockdowns. Access to physical/real equipment for practical learning remains important for engineering studies. Thus, this paper presents an approach for remotely accessing and controlling automation equipment for engineering practical activities. Specifically, it addresses the issue of accessing and controlling machines for programmable logic controller (PLC) programming tasks. The combination of a scheduler, remote desktop access, graphical user interface, and a micro-controller allows students to work remotely on practical equipment. The lab computer can be accessed via a remote computer to select one of multiple equipment for practical activities. A prototype system was constructed as proof of concept. A Low-Cost System for Remote Access and Control of Automation Equipment

The need for high-availability, efficient, training solutions for industrial automation technology is driving the adoption of new tools, software and services supporting the Industry 4.0 paradigm. Specific requirements include vendor agnostic and standards-based programming languages and availability of both physical input–output and industrial communication, while providing a rich and immersive experience through suitable human–machine interface components. The PROSIM platform represents an integrated embedded hardware-software system for programmable logic controller automation training which provides examples in increasing order of complexity, ranging from basic digital logic up to complex manufacturing simulations and process control. A fully software-based solution has been developed in order to complement the laboratory-based system as a training digital twin. We describe the design, implementation and evaluation of the platform as ported onto the HUBCAP collaborative sandboxing environment for virtualized operation. Integration of dedicated communication libraries for Open Platform Communications, Unified Architecture, with simulated programmable logic controllers such as PLCSIM and ARSim is also discussed for fully leveraging new features emerging from increased information and operational technology convergence witnessed in realistic, plant-level, environments. Qualitative and quantitative evaluation in comparison to the physical system while leveraging the resources provided by the cloud environment is carried out.

PROSIM in the Cloud: Remote Automation Training Platform with Virtualized Infrastructure

In this paper, the design and implementation of an industrial automation platform and a pneumatic levitation system are proposed. This system allows to analyze and evaluate control algorithms. The user interface and control were designed based on LabViewand MATLAB programming tools. A first learning activity for students (in the proposed system) is the design of controllers based on model and, in designer's experience in the process. Therefore, two controllers are proposed. The first one a traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and the other one a PD-fuzzy controller. The performance of each controller was analyzed by comparing the outputs for tracking reference (step input). The educational platform was created with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of the teaching-learning processes of the main theoretical aspects of control engineering and programmable logic controllers.

The chapter presents an approach to designing an educational program implemented in MOOC format. By the example of this approach, an educational program including the creation of a student’s home laboratory in the areas of electronics, programming, and design is developed. It is demonstrated that the cost of creating a home laboratory is such that many students from developed countries have the opportunity to build their own home learning laboratory to perform practical work on the construction of complete technical devices. Safety issues in using the home lab and forming practical assignments are addressed. Assumptions are made about the development of such direction in the creation of educational programs.
