The paper proposes a multibody dynamic simulation to numerically evaluate the generated axial force (GAF) and plunging resistant force (PRF) practically related to the shudder and idling vibration of an automobile. A numerical analysis of the drive shaft coupling of a ball joint (BJ) and two plunging type joints, a tripod joint (TJ), and a very low axial force tripod joint (VTJ), are conducted using the commercial program DAFUL. User-defined subroutines of a friction model illustrating the contacted parts of the outboard and inboard joint are subsequently developed to overcome the numerical instability and improve the solution performance. The Coulomb friction effect is applied to describe the contact models of the lubricated parts in the rolling and sliding mechanisms. The numerical results, in accordance with the joint articulation angle variation, are validated with experimentation. The offset between spider and housing is demonstrated to be the critical role in producing the third order component of the axial force that potentially causes the noise and vibration in the vehicle. The VTJ shows an excellent behavior for the shudder when compared with the TJ. In addition, a flexible nonlinear contact analysis coupled with multibody dynamics is also performed to show the dynamic strength characteristics of the rollers, housing, and spider.

Estimation of Generated Axial Force Considering Rolling–Sliding Friction in Tripod-Type Constant Velocity Joint

In this paper the influences of some relevant dimensional and geometrical errors on both the kinematic performance and the dynamic performance of an automotive Rzeppa ball joint were investigated. The study focused on the development of a dedicated and improved multi-body three-dimensional model of the joint and the corresponding numerical simulations of different configurations. The model is able to manage the presence of the redundant constraints which are present in the joint architecture because of the use of spring connections between parts which replace most of the kinematic constraints or geometrical contact conditions. Three types of errors were investigated, and both kinematic irregularities and dynamic irregularities are reported in graphs and discussed. The effects of different articulation angles between the inner ring and the outer ring were also investigated.

Secondary Torque in Automotive Drive Shaft Ball Joints: Influence of Geometry and Friction

Tripod constant velocity (TCV) joints are common components in automotive and mechanical applications. The benefits of the TCV joint are its high plunge capacity and high torque capacity. During power transmission, the friction inside the joint generates an axial force according to the kinematics. This force causes noise and vibration problems. In this study, a simplified multi-body dynamic model based on a phenomenological TCV joint friction model is developed. This model considers the generated axial force (GAF) of a TCV joint with different lubricate conditions. The efficiency and accuracy are verified by comparison with other prediction models and experiments. Thus, this model can be used to design and control the manufacture process of TCV joints.

Simplified dynamics model for axial force in tripod constant velocity joint

The present paper deals with measurements and models of axial force produced by a tripod joint of an automotive drive-shaft. An automotive drive-shaft consists of a plunging tripod joint close to the gearbox and a fixed ball joint close to the wheel. Both joints are connected by an intermediate shaft.
 
The measurements of axial force are derived from a gauge extensometry sensor placed on an industrial test bench. The ball joint is modeled as a true and perfect spherical link. For the tripod joint, the rollers between the tripod and the tulip ramps are introduced in such a way that their orientation is taken in account. Then, two inverse models are proposed with a constant input velocity and a constant output torque. To start with, an analytical model is proposed; then a more sophisticated model using Adams software is introduced. It is shown that both models are coherent and in good agreement with experimental measurements of axial forces. Since axial forces generate nuisance vibration harshness with shudder in particular, models are used to predict shudder excitation dependence on tulip radius, input torque, shaft rotation speed and Coulomb friction. Finally, the Coulomb friction coefficient is identified in the models.
