Nuclear magnetic and quadrupole moments for nuclear structure research on exotic nuclei

We report the first g factor measurement on microsecond isomers of neutronrich nuclei produced in projectile-fragmentation reactions at intermediate energies. The nuclides in the vicinity of 68 Ni were produced and spin oriented following the fragmentation of a 76 Ge, 61.4 MeV u −1 beam at GANIL. The LISE spectrometer was used to select the nuclei of interest. The time-dependent perturbed angular distribution (TDPAD) method was applied in combination with th eh eavy-ion–gamma correlation technique to measure the g factors of 69m Cu (J π = 13/2 + , T1/2 = 350 ns) and 67m Ni (J π = 9/2 + , T1/2 = 13.3 µs). Specific details of the experimental technique and the comparison of the results (|g( 69m Cu) |= 0.225(25) and |g( 67m Ni) |= 0.125(6)) with theoretical calculations are discussed. These results provide another indication of the importance of proton excitations across the Z = 28 shell gap.

g factor measurements of μs isomeric states in neutron-rich nuclei around 68Ni produced in projectile-fragmentation reactions

Isomeric ratios and momentum distributions of nuclei produced in the fragmentation of a 60A MeV ${}^{92}\mathrm{Mo}$ beam on a thin ${}^{27}\mathrm{Al}$ target have been studied in detail. A strong dependence of the isomeric ratio on the structure of the isomer and on the reaction mechanism has been observed for the first time at intermediate energies. The results are quantitatively reproduced in a framework of kinematical and statistical models of nuclear reactions.

Nuclear spin alignment and static moments of light projectile fragments measured with the Level Mixing Resonance (LMR) method

Level Mixing Spectroscopy (LEMS) can be used to determine nuclear quadrupole moments. In this paper it is shown how LEMS can be applied to nuclei implanted in a cubic lattice. In this case the quadrupole interaction is due to electric field gradients produced by defects. The method has been illustrated by measuring quadrupole moments of 202–204 Po isomers produced in nat Pt( 12 C, 4n) and nat Pt( 13 C, 5n) reactions, the (natural) Platinum serving as a host material. The result could be analysed with the assumption of two different defect associated sites, making up for about 80% of the total site population. The experimental ratio Q ( 202 Po,8 + )/ Q ( 204 Po,8 + ) is in agreement with the systematics in the lead region. LEMS measurements in cubic crystals provide another nuclear method for the study of nuclear quantities or solid state parameters.
