Converter-based generators are increasingly replacing classical synchronous generation, resulting in significant challenges to the operation and planning of modern power systems. Power electronics (PE)-based equipment, along with non-linear PE-driven loads, introduce time-varying characteristics and fast switching behavior that increases the complexity of the power system model. Faster control actions are needed to overcome the fast switching dynamics to ensure the reliability and stability of future power systems. Thus, this requires advanced and detailed simulation methods and tools with highly accurate equivalent models to embody the relatively slower electromechanical to faster electromagnetic transient (EMT) phenomena. Conventional transient stability analysis using positive-sequence simulators has become inadequate for representing converter-dominated power systems, while EMT simulators suffer from the high computational burden. This review paper presents accelerated EMT simulation methods and tools that are categorized and discussed in three topics: system equivalents, simulation methods, and accelerating tools. Dynamic system equivalent techniques are discussed to model small to large interconnected external systems of the grid network. Moreover, a systematic review is made for existing EMT simulation methods, along with advanced co-simulation methods, for addressing simulation speed and accuracy issues in large power system networks. Emerging hardware-based simulation tools are reviewed that reduce the computational burden and increase the simulation efficiency of the power system model. Challenges and trends in EMT simulation are also presented and concluded by providing perspectives on this research topic.

Review of Methods to Accelerate Electromagnetic Transient Simulation of Power Systems

Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) is widely used in power system dynamics studies. However, in most cases EMTP is found inadequate for dealing with the realistic size power systems due to the small time step resulting in relatively slow simulation speeds. To accelerate the EMTP simulations of power system dynamics, a novel frequency-adaptive methodology is proposed. In this method, a new transformation is presented. The properties of the transformation and the numerical solutions based on the transformation are discussed. The component models obtained by discretizing the differential equations at the branch level are also given which are convenient for EMTP implementation. The proposed method allows using large time steps without sacrificing accuracy, which greatly improves the simulation speed. To validate the proposed methodology, a general program has been developed. Furthermore, various case studies substantiate the claims and demonstrate the application of the method.

Time Domain Transformation Method for Accelerating EMTP Simulation of Power System Dynamics

An important impediment to using widely available software to simulate the behavior of advanced power systems for electric ships is that the simulation time is too long to be practical. Consequently, the Center for Electromechanics at the University of Texas at Austin (UT-CEM) is developing a multicore power system solver to simulate large shipboard power systems. In its first year of development, the focus is on testing CEM's solver (CEMS) for accuracy. This paper presents an overview of the major traits of CEMS, and compares its simulation results to the well-known commercial power system simulator SimPowerSystems. Preliminary results show that accuracy is maintained and improved in specific test cases.

Development of a multicore power system simulator for ship systems

This paper presents an approach to accelerate the simulation of shipboard power systems. A common issue in the ship research community is the simulation run time of large-scale shipboard power systems. A contributor to lengthy run times is that PC-based power system simulators do not exploit multicore technology, which stems from the fact that software trails advances in hardware. The Center for Electromechanics at the University of Texas at Austin (UT-CEM) is developing a multicore power system solver (CEMSolver) to simulate shipboard power system models in significantly less time. The simulation run time is reduced by first partitioning power system models and then creating simulations at the subsystem level. This accelerates the simulation of shipboard power systems. A general overview of CEMSolver and a comparison of its run times against those of SimPowerSystems are presented. The results demonstrate that CEMSolver can speed up the simulation of shipboard power system models built with SimPowerSystems up to 80 times, and that, despite common belief, multicore desktop computers are capable of executing complex simulation scenarios.

Accelerating the simulation of shipboard power systems

This paper presents a new method named "node-splitting algorithm" used to deal with the power system electromagnetic transient network partition and parallel simulation. According to this method, node splitting is used to partition the original network and the boundary buses voltage's equal function is used to reconcile the whole system. Combined with the other method-decoupling method through long transmission lines, not only the electromagnetic transient simulation's speed rises a lot, but also the network partition becomes very flexible. The application sample of the modified IEEE 14-bus system's parallel simulation has validated this method.

This paper presents a new method to implement real time digital simulation based on a PC. This method uses the MATLAB as the whole simulation start point. First, SIMULINK and Power System Blockset is used to build up system models or controller blocks, then Real time Workshop is employed to build up the C/C++ program from the SIMULINK/PSB models. Finally, by integrating the data through the D/A and A/D conversion interfaces, the real-time simulation or closed-loop testing can be done. In this paper, the model and method of closed-loop testing of real PSS device have been described. Issues involved in the real-time simulation and closed-loop testing were discussed.
