PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly control an outer periphery grinder of a polar coordinate type by an inexpensive controller comprising a combination of a sequencer and motion. SOLUTION: The controller 1 comprising a combination of the sequencer 11 and the motion 12 is used as the controller 1 for controlling the outer periphery grinder of a polar coordinate type. A touch panel incorporated in a personal computer 14 is mounted as a touch panel 13 attached to the sequencer. Calculation of fine moving blocks which has been conventionally carried out by the motion is carried out by the personal computer 14. The calculated fine moving blocks are sequentially transferred or a plurality of the fine moving blocks are together transferred to the motion 12. PURPOSE: To carry out circumferential grinding of a radially non-circular workpiece, especially, cam or polygonal grinding CONSTITUTION: A workpiece 15 is rotated around a first axis 18 as its center, and a grinding wheel 11 is made to cut in along a second axis 13 favorably making an angle of 90 deg against the first axis 18 The workpiece 15 and the grinding wheel 11 are rotated and made to cut in by a specified method in dependence on a data set A surface of the workpiece 15 is ground and removed into an intermediate outline in a large number of steps equivalent to each one rotation of the workpiece along a spiral locus of a contact point 20 by starting from a rough outline and finally into a finished outline After performance of the intermediate outline, a new data set for following rotation of the workpiece is called each time Specified absolute dimensions RGist of the workpiece are continuously measured, and deflection ΔRG with a target value RGsoll is found This deflection ΔRG is compared with a threshold value by the step 40 When it reaches a value lower than the threshold value, it skips over a specified number of steps and advances to a first finish grinding step
