A temperature sensor is fabricated in an integrated circuit in combination with another device such as a microprocessor using a fabrication technology that is suitable for fabricating the device. Operation of the temperature sensor is based on the bandgap physics of semiconductors using a bandgap reference circuit and an amplifier that generate two measurement voltages, a voltage that is temperature-dependent and a voltage that is temperature-independent. The temperature sensor includes a bandgap power supply circuit that supplies a power supply voltage that is very stable to drive the temperature sensor so that the temperature sensor generates an output signal that is essentially independent of the power supply voltage.

A bandgap voltage reference circuit includes a feedback controlled current mirror, a bandgap voltage generator, and a voltage comparator. The current mirror, in response to a feedback control signal from the voltage comparator, generates a controllable reference current. The bandgap voltage generator generates two reference voltages based upon conduction of the reference current from the current mirror through two PN diodes having different emitter areas. The voltage comparator compares the two reference voltages and generates the feedback control signal for the current mirror. Such a bandgap voltage reference circuit simultaneously generates a bandgap voltage reference and a current mirror reference while also being operable over a wide power supply voltage range and down to very low power supply voltage values.

A band-gap reference voltage generator comprises an operational amplifier comprising a first input and a second input, the first input being coupled to a first feedback network and the second input being coupled to a second feedback network both coupled to an output of the operational amplifier providing a reference voltage. The first feedback network contains an emitter-base junction of first bipolar junction transistor and the second feedback network contains an emitter-base junction of second bipolar junction transistor. A selectively activated current supply supplies a bias current to the operational amplifier, the current supply being deactivatable in a substantially zero power consumption operating condition for turning the reference voltage generator off. A start-up circuit activated upon start-up of the reference voltage generator for a fixed, prescribed time interval forces a start-up current to flow through the first bipolar junction transistor means.

An apparatus comprises a bandgap reference voltage circuit with first and second current legs and circuitry for generating a bandgap reference voltage. A transistor is coupled to the first current leg for selectively providing current to the first leg of the bandgap reference voltage circuit. A control circuit controls the transistor to turn the transistor on when an external voltage supply is initially applied to the apparatus to provide a start up current to the bandgap voltage reference source and senses an output voltage developed by the bandgap reference current source. The control circuit turns off the transistor responsive to the sensed developed voltage when the sensed developed voltage rises above a predetermined threshold.

A circuit for generating a reference voltage and detecting a drop in a supply voltage, comprising at least one threshold comparator having an input terminal and an output terminal, and a voltage divider connected between a first supply voltage reference and a second voltage reference and connected to the input terminal of the comparator, further provides for the output terminal of said comparator to be connected to the input terminal through at least one feedback network comprising at least one current generator. The feedback network further comprises a buffer block having an input terminal connected to said comparator and a first output terminal connected to a switch which is connected between a circuit node of said voltage divider and the second voltage reference.

A BiMOS voltage reference circuit which includes a bandgap circuit for providing a predetermined voltage at an output of the circuit that is independent of temperature. A start-up and bias circuit coupled to the bandgap circuit for providing a start-up current to the bandgap circuit during power-up and for providing a bias current to the bandgap circuit after power-up. A feedback circuit coupled to the bandgap circuit for maintaining the bias current to the bandgap circuit independent of power supply variations wherein the predetermined voltage at the output of the circuit is also independent of power supply variations as well as temperature.
