Melanoma is one of the deadliest types of skin cancer that leads to death if not diagnosed early. Many skin lesions are similar in the early stages, which causes an inaccurate diagnosis. Accurate diagnosis of the types of skin lesions helps dermatologists save patients’ lives. In this paper, we propose hybrid systems based on the advantages of fused CNN models. CNN models receive dermoscopy images of the ISIC 2019 dataset after segmenting the area of lesions and isolating them from healthy skin through the Geometric Active Contour (GAC) algorithm. Artificial neural network (ANN) and Random Forest (Rf) receive fused CNN features and classify them with high accuracy. The first methodology involved analyzing the area of skin lesions and diagnosing their type early using the hybrid models CNN-ANN and CNN-RF. CNN models (AlexNet, GoogLeNet and VGG16) receive lesions area only and produce high depth feature maps. Thus, the deep feature maps were reduced by the PCA and then classified by ANN and RF networks. The second methodology involved analyzing the area of skin lesions and diagnosing their type early using the hybrid CNN-ANN and CNN-RF models based on the features of the fused CNN models. It is worth noting that the features of the CNN models were serially integrated after reducing their high dimensions by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Hybrid models based on fused CNN features achieved promising results for diagnosing dermatoscopic images of the ISIC 2019 data set and distinguishing skin cancer from other skin lesions. The AlexNet-GoogLeNet-VGG16-ANN hybrid model achieved an AUC of 94.41%, sensitivity of 88.90%, accuracy of 96.10%, precision of 88.69%, and specificity of 99.44%.

AI Techniques of Dermoscopy Image Analysis for the Early Detection of Skin Lesions Based on Combined CNN Features

Abstract With the rising popularity of immersive virtual reality (iVR) technologies, retailers are increasingly seeking innovative ways to create unique digital shopping experiences for their consumers. However, existing literature lacks a unified and comprehensive review that examines the interplay between virtual stimuli and consumer behavior in iVR shopping environments. To fill this gap, we conducted a systematic literature review, employing the Stimulus‐Organisms‐Responses (S‐O‐R) model as the underlying theoretical framework. This review analyzed empirical research on consumer behavior in iVR retail environments by focusing on experimental studies. Following the thematic analysis, we categorized the outcomes into descriptive themes to better comprehend consumer behavior within each theme. Our findings provide valuable insights for retailers and marketers aiming to enhance the consumer shopping experience using iVR technologies and suggest directions for future research. 

Consumer behavior in immersive virtual reality retail environments: A systematic literature review using the stimuli‐organisms‐responses (S‐O‐r) model

Our aim was to assess sleep quality in different subgroups of preclinical medical students, and then to identify specific lifestyle factors, academic and social factors as well as Corona virus related factors that were associated with poor sleeping quality and poor psychological health. Study participants were all medical students at King Saud University of Medical Sciences in the first and second years (648 students), and the study was conducted from December 2021 to January 2022. We administered the survey on paper as well as online. We used three types of questionnaires in this study. The first was a self-administered questionnaire, the second was a validated Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) for finding sleeping problems, and the third was a validated DASS 10 for determining Depression, Anxiety, and Stress. A total of 361 pre-clinical medical students consisted of 146 (40.4%) males and 215 (59.5%) females. The majority of the students, 246 (68.1%), were in their second year. Furthermore, in the current study, students who had poor academic performance (15.8%), satisfactory academic performance (21.3%), or good academic performance (30.7%) had significant sleeping problems found (χ2 = 19.4; p = 0.001), among them poor academic performance students 21.6%, satisfactory academic performance students (29.3%), and good academic performance students (29.3%) had moderate to severe levelled sleeping problems. Similarly, poor, satisfactory, and good academic performers experienced the highest levels of anxiety (poor = 21.5%; satisfactory = 22.1%; and good = 22.8%); stress (poor = 22.4%; satisfactory = 25.2%; and good = 22.4%); and depression (poor = 40.5%; satisfactory = 40.5%; and good = 11.9%). The majority of students (64.8%) reported that during the pandemic crisis their anxiety levels were high. Additionally, students reported significantly high sleeping issues (χ2 = 10.6; p = 0.001) and also serious psychological issues (Anxiety = 34.9 (0.000); Stress = 32.5 (0.000); and Depression = 5.42 (0.01)). There was a high prevalence of sleep issues, anxiety, stress, and depression among the pre-clinical medical students, with significantly higher sleeping disorders, anxiety, stress, and depression levels among those medical students who struggle with their academic performances, poor lifestyle factor, and poor Social and COVID management.

Stress, Anxiety, and Depression in Pre-Clinical Medical Students: Prevalence and Association with Sleep Disorders

Sensor-based human activity recognition with wearable devices has captured the attention of researchers in the last decade. The possibility of collecting large sets of data from various sensors in different body parts, automatic feature extraction, and aiming to recognize more complex activities have led to a rapid increase in the use of deep learning models in the field. More recently, using attention-based models for dynamically fine-tuning the model features and, in turn, improving the model performance has been investigated. However, the impact of using channel, spatial, or combined attention methods of the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) on the high-performing DeepConvLSTM model, a hybrid model proposed for sensor-based human activity recognition, has yet to be studied. Additionally, since wearables have limited resources, analysing the parameter requirements of attention modules can serve as an indicator for optimizing resource consumption. In this study, we explored the performance of CBAM on the DeepConvLSTM architecture both in terms of recognition performance and the number of additional parameters required by attention modules. In this direction, the effect of channel and spatial attention, individually and in combination, were examined. To evaluate the model performance, the Pamap2 dataset containing 12 daily activities and the Opportunity dataset with its 18 micro activities were utilized. The results showed that the performance for Opportunity increased from 0.74 to 0.77 in the macro f1-score owing to spatial attention, while for Pamap2, the performance increased from 0.95 to 0.96 owing to the channel attention applied to DeepConvLSTM with a negligible number of additional parameters. Moreover, when the activity-based results were analysed, it was observed that the attention mechanism increased the performance of the activities with the worst performance in the baseline model without attention. We present a comparison with related studies that use the same datasets and show that we could achieve higher scores on both datasets by combining CBAM and DeepConvLSTM.

On the Use of a Convolutional Block Attention Module in Deep Learning-Based Human Activity Recognition with Motion Sensors

Automatic tracking and quantification of exercises not only helps in motivating people but also contributes towards improving health conditions. Weight training, in addition to aerobic exercises, is an important component of a balanced exercise program. Excellent trackers are available for aerobic exercises but, in contrast, tracking free weight exercises is still performed manually. This study presents the details of our data acquisition effort using a single chest-mounted tri-axial accelerometer, followed by a novel method for the recognition of a wide range of gym-based free weight exercises. Exercises are recognized using LSTM neural networks and the reported results confirm the feasibility of the proposed approach. We train and test several LSTM-based gym exercise recognition models. More specifically, in one set of experiments, we experiment with separate models, one for each muscle group. In another experiment, we develop a universal model for all exercises. We believe that the promising results will potentially contribute to the vision of an automated system for comprehensive monitoring and analysis of gym-based exercises and create a new experience for exercising by freeing the exerciser from manual record-keeping.

Sensor-Based Gym Physical Exercise Recognition: Data Acquisition and Experiments

Skin cancer develops due to the unusual growth of skin cells. Early detection is critical for the recognition of multiclass pigmented skin lesions (PSLs). At an early stage, the manual work by ophthalmologists takes time to recognize the PSLs. Therefore, several “computer-aided diagnosis (CAD)” systems are developed by using image processing, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) techniques. Deep-CNN models outperformed traditional ML approaches in extracting complex features from PSLs. In this study, a special transfer learning (TL)-based CNN model is suggested for the diagnosis of seven classes of PSLs. A novel approach (Light-Dermo) is developed that is based on a lightweight CNN model and applies the channelwise attention (CA) mechanism with a focus on computational efficiency. The ShuffleNet architecture is chosen as the backbone, and squeeze-and-excitation (SE) blocks are incorporated as the technique to enhance the original ShuffleNet architecture. Initially, an accessible dataset with 14,000 images of PSLs from seven classes is used to validate the Light-Dermo model. To increase the size of the dataset and control its imbalance, we have applied data augmentation techniques to seven classes of PSLs. By applying this technique, we collected 28,000 images from the HAM10000, ISIS-2019, and ISIC-2020 datasets. The outcomes of the experiments show that the suggested approach outperforms compared techniques in many cases. The most accurately trained model has an accuracy of 99.14%, a specificity of 98.20%, a sensitivity of 97.45%, and an F1-score of 98.1%, with fewer parameters compared to state-of-the-art DL models. The experimental results show that Light-Dermo assists the dermatologist in the better diagnosis of PSLs. The Light-Dermo code is available to the public on GitHub so that researchers can use it and improve it.

Light-Dermo: A Lightweight Pretrained Convolution Neural Network for the Diagnosis of Multiclass Skin Lesions

It is difficult for clinicians or less-experienced ophthalmologists to detect early eye-related diseases. By hand, eye disease diagnosis is labor-intensive, prone to mistakes, and challenging because of the variety of ocular diseases such as glaucoma (GA), diabetic retinopathy (DR), cataract (CT), and normal eye-related diseases (NL). An automated ocular disease detection system with computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tools is required to recognize eye-related diseases. Nowadays, deep learning (DL) algorithms enhance the classification results of retinograph images. To address these issues, we developed an intelligent detection system based on retinal fundus images. To create this system, we used ODIR and RFMiD datasets, which included various retinographics of distinct classes of the fundus, using cutting-edge image classification algorithms like ensemble-based transfer learning. In this paper, we suggest a three-step hybrid ensemble model that combines a classifier, a feature extractor, and a feature selector. The original image features are first extracted using a pre-trained AlexNet model with an enhanced structure. The improved AlexNet (iAlexNet) architecture with attention and dense layers offers enhanced feature extraction, task adaptability, interpretability, and potential accuracy benefits compared to other transfer learning architectures, making it particularly suited for tasks like retinograph classification. The extracted features are then selected using the ReliefF method, and then the most crucial elements are chosen to minimize the feature dimension. Finally, an XgBoost classifier offers classification outcomes based on the desired features. These classifications represent different ocular illnesses. We utilized data augmentation techniques to control class imbalance issues. The deep-ocular model, based mainly on the AlexNet-ReliefF-XgBoost model, achieves an accuracy of 95.13%. The results indicate the proposed ensemble model can assist dermatologists in making early decisions for the diagnosing and screening of eye-related diseases.

Deep-Ocular: Improved Transfer Learning Architecture Using Self-Attention and Dense Layers for Recognition of Ocular Diseases

A new algorithm for practical Byzantine fault tolerance (PBFT), called score-PBFT or S-PBFT, is proposed to solve the problems of high communication overhead and low algorithm efficiency. This algorithm is based on the characteristics of the consortium chain. The scoring mechanism for nodes is added. All the nodes are broken up into consensus nodes, candidate nodes, and early nodes. To make sure the consensus nodes are as reliable as possible, the nodes are changed dynamically based on how each node is behaving. Improved: the election method for the controller node has been changed. The node’s score and behaviour are used as the election basis to make the algorithm more stable. In this paper, we want to improve the consensus protocol’s execution process, cut down on how many nodes are involved in the consensus process, simplify it, and make it more efficient. Results show that, when compared with the PBFT algorithm, the S-PBFT algorithm has a shorter consensus delay, less communication overhead and throughput, and better consensus node reliability.

Fault Tolerance Byzantine Algorithm for Lower Overhead Blockchain

A fuzzy cloud resource scheduling model with time-cost constraints is built using fuzzy triangular numbers to represent uncertain task execution time. Task scheduling reduces total time and cost spent on a project. It connects virtual machines and functions. Particle swarm optimization (HPO) is used to plan cloud resources (HSOA). The approach uses orthogonal particle swarm initialization to increase the quality of the initial particle exploration, rerandomization to regulate the particle search range, and real-time updating of inertia weights to control particle speed. The suggested problem model and optimization approach are evaluated using random simulation data provided by the CloudSim simulation platform. Less overall execution time and a lower cost are shown to have fast convergence and solution capabilities in experiments.
