Micromechanical contact load force sensor for sensing magnitude and distribution of loads and tool employing micromechanical contact load force sensor
Christopher V. Trainor,Steve T. Cho,Ralph Hopkins +2 more
- 07 Aug 1995
TL;DR: In this paper, a micromechanical contact load force sensor is described, which comprises an array of capacitive load cells on a substrate and is able to sense high loads, on the order on 10 9 N/m 2, and distribute the load over a suitable number of the cells of the array while minimizing crosstalk between adjacent cells.

Trenches to reduce charging effects and to control out-of-plane sensitivities in tuning fork gyroscopes and other sensors
Marc S. Weinberg,Steven T. Cho,Ralph Hopkins,Lance C. Niles,Anthony S. Kourepenis,Eric M. Hildebrant,Paul A. Ward +6 more
- 29 Apr 1997
TL;DR: Trenches which reduce or eliminate force and sensitivity associated with proof mass motion normal to the substrate as a result of voltage transients are disclosed in this paper, which provides increased separation between interleaved comb electrodes and the substrate, and thereby reduces the comb lift to drive ratio.

Hybrid wafer gyroscope
Lyle J. Jenkins,Ralph Hopkins,K. Kumar,Paul Greiff,Edmund R. Foster,Richard M. Walker,Richard H. Coco,Anthony Michael Moscaritolo +7 more
- 26 Jul 2001
TL;DR: A hybrid wafer gyroscope as discussed by the authors includes a combination of micro-machined components and traditional electromechanical components to form a high degree of stability, including a rotor, gimbal, flexures and stop cutouts.

Anodic bonding of silicon carbide to glass
Carissa Tudryn,Jeffrey T. Borenstein,Ralph Hopkins +2 more
- 01 Oct 2003
TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method for anodic bond formation using a voltage between the first and second materials to cause an anodic link to form, where the surface of the second material is contacted by a surface of a first material, and the voltage is applied to the first material to create the anodic connection.

Stress-based electrostatic monitoring of chemical reactions and binding
Marc S. Weinberg,Jeffrey T. Borenstein,Christopher E. Dubé,Ralph Hopkins,Edwin T. Carlen +4 more
- 02 Mar 2004
TL;DR: In this article, a diaphragm is coated with a material capable of selectively interacting with an analyte of interest, and interaction of the analyte with the coating exerts stresses tangential to the diaphrasm's surface.
