The method can further include associating a level of trust with the physical location based on the neighboring network device. The first device be one of a variety of devices, such as a router, a switch, a network entry device, a firewall device, or a gateway.

A distance learning system consists of a plurality of multi-cast clients of various classes and priorities with one multi-cast client as a primary multi-cast client, a multi-cast server, arbitrator and a distance learning session coordinator. The primary multi-cast client provides the default or primary Audio-Visual Material (AVM) stream. The Multi-Cast Server (MCS) setups a multi-cast over a point to multi-point connection which connects all multi-cast clients that are to take part in a particular distance learning session, along with the Primary multi-cast client. Additionally, the primary multi-cast client is connected to the MCS via a point-to-point link. The multi-cast clients and the primary multi-cast client receive an AVM material stream from the multi-cast server via the point to multi-point connection. When a multi-cast client wishes to speak, a speaking request is sent to the arbitrator, the arbitrator determines whether to grant or deny the speaking request. If permission is granted then a point-to-point link is established between the requesting multi-cast client and the MCS. The requesting multi-cast client then provides an AVM stream to the multi-cast server over the newly established point-to-point connection and the multi-cast server switches or provides the AVM stream associated with the requesting multi-cast Client over the point to multi-point connection. When the requesting multi-cast client is through speaking the MCS switches the AVM stream associated with the primary multi-cast client onto the point to multi-point connection and the point-to-point link with the requesting multi-cast client is terminated.

Method and apparatus for multi-cast based video conferencing

Given the growing use of ATM, there is great interest in migrating the protocols which run on today's common networking technologies to ATM. There is particular interest in running the IP protocol on top of ATM. This provides an easy bridge between current networking protocols and applications and future ATM-only protocols and applications One of the move recent IP protocols, IP-multicast, has been used for video-conferencing over the Internet. This application is a good example of a current technology that could benefit from the higher bandwidths offered by ATM. IP-multicast provides a method for sending copies of packets to every member of a group simply by sending the packet to the group's address. In order to perform this IP-multicasting on top of ATM efficiently, it is expected that a mapping of IP multicast subnet functionality to ATM must be developed. The paper examines current developments in ATM and their relation to IP-multicast in an attempt to identify schemes for achieving IP-multicast subnet functionality in ATM. >

A comparison of native ATM-multicast to IP-multicast with emphasis on mapping between the two

Because ATM provides a faster transfer mechanism than more conventional network technologies such as packet switching and Ethernet, there is a great deal of interest in running current protocols such as IP over ATM. This will provide an easy bridge between current networking protocols and applications and future ATM-only protocols and applications. This paper examines the properties of IP-multicast and attempts to show how ATM networks can achieve the same functionality in order to run IP-multicast protocols over ATM networks. Work currently being done in running IP-multicast over ATM is evaluated and recommendations for possible additions and enhancements are made.
